Day 7. Today's rule was: no piano. This one is entirely weird synth sounds, and I played a lot with the EQ. The last thing I did was Add the 4 bar intro, which is kind of modeled after the intro to Ladytron's "Destroy Everything You Touch" #100daysofmusic #100daysproject #the100dayproject

Day 6. I wanted to try something totally different. Ended up not as different as I was going for. I think next time the rule is no piano. #100daysofmusic #100daysproject #the100dayproject

  • Day 6: Polling tiers for OwnYourGram #100DaysOfIndieWeb

Previously, OwnYourGram would check all users' Instagram feeds once an hour. I changed it to have four polling tiers, and the interval for the top tier is every 15 minutes now. This means people who post lots of photos will now see their photos on their site sooner, and because of the tiered approach, I won't be wasting resources on feeds that post infrequently. The four tiers are:Every 15 minutes (on the 0, 15, 30 and 45 minute mark) - 11 usersEvery hour (5 minutes after the hour) - 12 usersEvery 6 hours (at 00:10, 06:10, 12:10, 18:10 UTC) - 11 usersOnce a day (at 01:10 UTC) - 38 usersUsers are sorted into tiers based on the number of photos posted in the last 14 days. The more you post, the more often OwnYourGram checks your feed! If your Micropub endpoint returns an error, then you're bumped down a tier. If you're at the lowest tier and there's an error, then polling will be disabled completely until you log back in.Thanks to snarfed for suggesting the tiered approach!

Day 5. This morning I was trying to think of what I'd write today, and then I realized this tune had been going through my head for a while, so I jotted it down on the piano. I filled it out with a couple other instruments a bit later. For this track I was experimenting with mastering techniques more than instrumentation. Trying to make sure there was a good balance between the sound from the various instruments, playing with reverb and EQ to separate the instruments from each other. I still have a lot to learn in that department. This song ends abruptly because it can be played on a continuous loop. #100daysofmusic #100daysproject #the100dayproject

Knocked out a couple of minor UI improvements to Quill this morning. Previously, the reply context field would show the whole note, so super long notes or blog posts would take over the whole screen. (Issue 62)

Day 4. This one only took and hour. Not really sure what I was going for here either. I'm not super happy with the little string trills, but I think with another hour or so I could tweak them to sound better. I actually started reading the manual for the East/West orchestra samples and there's a loooot of flexibility they give you with controlling the finger position, bowing direction, where the bow comes down on the strings, etc. I'll get a chance to play with those more later. But for now, happy to have today's song done before 9am! #100daysofmusic #100daysproject #the100dayproject

Day 3. Today's theme is "breaking news intro song", and also "Aaron attempts to spend less than 5 hours on this today unlike yesterday". I think I accomplished both! #100daysofmusic #100daysproject #the100dayproject

Day 2! This took way longer than I anticipated, and surprisingly not because of the video.

I started working on it at a coffee shop in NW with the instruments that come with Logic Pro. I got the initial structure of the song done, except for figuring out how it would end, and then decided to got home to finish it.

On the 35 minute bike ride home, I kept going over it in my head and figure out how to end it, and also decided to throw in the little synth arpeggios for the second half. Back at home, I switched most of the instruments over to the East/West instruments which sound way better and are much more expressive.

I didn't really know what to expect going into this today, but I'm pretty happy with it!

  • 100 Days of IndieWeb

Inspired by the "100 Day Project", I'm setting out on a goal to accomplish 100 days of visible improvements to my IndieWeb projects. The challenge is to ship something visible and post about it for 100 days. Some of the improvements may be super tiny, some of them might be big. The only requirements are that it is an improvement to something I use myself, and it must also have a publicly visible result. This means an improvement to a closed source tool that only I use doesn't count, but if it's an improvement to something like Quill, which others can use, then that counts. The other part of the challenge is to make a post illustrating each improvement with a screenshot or short video. I am posting them with the "#100DaysOfIndieWeb" tag on my website so they all appear there! If you're interested in joining the challenge, it's never too late to start! Read more on the IndieWeb wiki, and add yourself there!

  • Day 2: Handling URLs with Fragment IDs #100DaysOfIndieWeb

Earlier this year when I launched XRay, I connected Loqi the IRC bot to it so that we would get inline IRC text previews when people linked to web pages in IRC. XRay works by finding an h-entry on the page, and getting the content and author information from it. Here's what it normally looks like in IRC.

Currently debating between #100DaysOfMusic or #100DaysOfIndieWeb for my #100Days project.

#100DaysOfMusic - The goal would be to write a short 10-20 second song every day. The goal would be to write something that's "finished" enough to be able to use it as a podcast or video intro song, so it doesn't have to be long, but has to sound decent. I want to get back into writing music, since I've only done a tiny bit over the last couple years, and it helps to have a more concrete goal. The only way to get better is with practice, so forcing myself to limit myself to 1 day for each "song" means I won't be able to get stuck down a path of trying to make something sound "perfect", and will just focus on trying out new things all the time.

#100DaysOfIndieWeb - The goal would be to make a visible improvement to any of my IndieWeb projects every day. Some of these projects are things like the interface I'm using to write this post, or the IndieWeb chat client, or the validators for some of the specs. The motivation for this is that I was just looking through the GitHub issues on some projects and realized there are some issues that have been open for over a year. I never regret making progress on these projects and would benefit from an excuse to do so regularly.

Crazy idea... maybe I can do both?
