would be cool if apple's touchid could act like goog authenticator –– that is, use the fingerprint as a way to generate a token for app auth
    Aaron Parecki
@naveen Totally! As soon as there's an API in iOS I'm going to make a TouchID plugin for IndieAuth.com!

    @fdevillamil Thanks for the notes!

Re 1: adding rel=me is a manual step right now if you're editing your own HTML. However as @barnabywalters pointed out, this is really "exposing important problems further up in the chain" (http://waterpigs.co.uk/articles/indiewebcamp-signin-ux/) It's also entirely possible that an identity hosting provider like about.me would add the markup automatically.

Re 2: This is not quite accurate anymore, given my recent work on distributed IndieAuth (see http://indiewebcamp.com/distributed-indieauth and http://spec.indieauth.com/ for more background). It is now possible for each person to delegate to an IndieAuth server of their choosing, rather than the relying site choosing which IndieAuth server to use. This makes it more resilient to failures.

Re 3: The cultural issue of associating your online identity with a URL rather than an email address has been the subject of much debate for a long time. I would also be open to suggestions on how to handle changing domain names, and whether that should happen at the IndieAuth layer or at the site you're logging in to. Feel free to add things to the wiki! http://indiewebcamp.com/indieauth

@aaronpk ... and the other is that I'm not going to link to my personal site from Twitter right now. :-/
    Aaron Parecki
@blaine Then luckily there are a number of other providers you can use that you wouldn't mind pointing to your personal site! Google+ is one of the best for that since they allow you to add multiple URLs. #indieauth

@aaronpk two problems: it did let me click twitter sign-in when it was just http (but then failed when the result was https).
    Aaron Parecki
@blaine This issue should be fixed now after clicking "re-scan". I just pushed up a patch tonight. #indieauth

@indiewebcamp Not sure why IndieAuth does not work with my http://nikolay.com! Can you please look into it? Thanks!

@nikolay Make sure you're entering "https://nikolay.com/"; with the "s" since your site uses SSL. Also join us in IRC if you would like more help debugging! http://indiewebcamp.com/IRC #indieauth

  • Password-less Logins from Your Own Domain with a Pebble Watch

IndieAuth is a way to use your own domain name to sign in to websites. To sign in, you enter your domain name, and IndieAuth looks for a supported authentication provider on your site and uses that to sign you in.

@aaronpk It would allow people to log in with their email, which is more familiar than a URL: a WF look-up gives you their profile page URL.
    Aaron Parecki
@ddossot The problem is it's too easy to not own your email address (@gmail.com, etc) so it's not really an "indie" identifier. The point of IndieAuth is to encourage people to own their online identity.

Is anyone aware of an #indieWeb auth mechanism which doesn't rely on implementors eventually just supporting Twitter, Facebook, Google auth?
    Aaron Parecki
@shawndrape Yes, that would be #OpenID. Mozilla's #BrowserID is similar but uses email addresses as the identity. RelMeAuth and IndieAuth are meant to address the complexities of OpenID by delegating to a third party.

@t @aaronpk Why limit #indieAuth algo just to OAuth? No OAuth2?
    Aaron Parecki
@julien51 Not sure what you mean, #IndieAuth uses Twitter (OAuth 1) and Github (OAuth 2) and more. /cc @t

  • Introducing IndieAuth

IndieAuth is a service that implements RelMeAuth, originally proposed by Tantek Çelik in February 2010. The original algorithm was described in a short text update on Tantek's website. Later that evening, Jeff Lindsay and Paul Tarjan implemented RelMeAuth in an open source Python library at Hacker Dojo and discussed/tested it in IRC. Tantek later launched a RelMeAuth prototype on his domain, which you can try out at tantek.com/relmeauth.

Hi, I'm Aaron Parecki, Director of Identity Standards at Okta, and co-founder of IndieWebCamp. I maintain oauth.net, write and consult about OAuth, and participate in the OAuth Working Group at the IETF. I also help people learn about video production and livestreaming. (detailed bio)

I've been tracking my location since 2008 and I wrote 100 songs in 100 days. I've spoken at conferences around the world about owning your data, OAuth, quantified self, and explained why R is a vowel. Read more.
