I am a member of the W3C Social Web Working Group (https://www.w3.org/wiki/Socialwg), and have been organizing IndieWebCamp (https://indieweb.org/) conferences in this space for the last 7 years. We've been making a lot of progress:
• https://www.w3.org/TR/webmention/ - cross-site commenting
• https://www.w3.org/TR/micropub/ - API for apps to create posts on various servers
• https://www.w3.org/TR/websub/ - realtime subscriptions to feeds
• More: https://indieweb.org/specs
We focus on making sure there are a plurality of implementations and approaches rather than trying to build a single software solution to solve everything.

Micropub is a W3C Recommendation
I'm excited to announce that Micropub is now a W3C Recommendation! It's been a long road, but we made it! This is the final stage in the W3C spec lifecycle, and means that the spec has gone through several stages of review, and all parts of the spec have been implemented by at least two people.continue reading... -

I'm about to live test a crazy new feature on my website, right as I'm getting on a plane for 10 hours with no internet. Hopefully I don't break my site with this! It should show a map with my plane's location, updating continuously for the next 10 hours.
