#IndieWebCamp

Good morning #indiewebcamp! Over the weekend, http://veganstraightedge.com and http://brennannovak.com and I worked on brainstorming and documenting plans for moving to indieweb.org including some interesting fun subdomains. Much of the motivation is to help newcomers more easily get involved in the community, and hopefully try to remove some of our current "inessential weirdnesses."

We'd love any feedback or suggestions! Everything is, of course, documented on the wiki: http://indiewebcamp.com/indieweb.org

The videos from IndieWeb Summit are finished and online now! I put together separate video clips for the two keynote talks in the morning, and also for the demos on the second day. @kylewm There's so much I want to reply to, but I only have time for a short reply right now. Short version:

Agreed that we need to better define our "inessential weirdnesses". I suspect they are actually things that developed organically and can be replaced by other less weird things that have the same effect and accomplish the same goal

Homebrew Website Club was originally created to be a less technical-focused place to discuss indieweb things.

An alternate IRC channel isn't a bad idea. Slack does a great job of encouraging splitting different discussion topics into channels and we could do the same. That said, I think rather than splitting off the newcomers into a separate channel, we should split off the jargon/plumbing/implementation discussion into a separate channel.

I think we're at an interesting time for the community right now. It's super important to have these discussions, so thanks for the writeup.

  • Inessential Weirdnesses in Open Source Software (www.harihareswara.net)
"The basic idea is, if you look at your own community with the eyes of an outsider, look at it from the perspective of a specific group of people you'd like to recruit, what do you think might discourage them or make them uncomfortable? Those are what we'll call "weirdnesses." And you get to decide, your community gets to decide, which weirdnesses are essential, and which ones, in Betsy Leondar-Wright's words, are inessential, meaning you should offer a workaround for them, or even try to change them."

    Notes from livestreaming IndieWebCamp Germany:

    • the backpack full of equipment is heavy, it would be great to figure out how to lighten it
    • need a longer microphone cable to get the boundary mic to reach farther
    • switching rooms meant that the HDMI splitter for the computer needed a longer cable the second day, so I need either more cables or ideally have the host provide at least one long HDMI cable for each location
    • having the computer running OBS for the streaming was useful since I was able to overlay session titles quickly as well as blank the stream with the IWC logo while fiddling with the switcher output
    • the IRC log overlay didn't come in handy as much as I thought it would, tho it was glitchy the first day and might have been more useful then if it had worked properly
    • I should ask the host to provide power extension cables rather than trying to bring those
    • having a longer HDMI cord that goes to the projector/TV means I can be more flexible in positioning the booth, since that was the limiting factor this time
    • two cameras was enough, not sure what I would do with a third for this kind of event
