SFO is the airport code, not the city. If you tell me you're visiting SFO, I assume you're just having a layover.
    Aaron Parecki
Interestingly we do actually refer to the city of Portland by our airport code PDX but I realize we are an exception here 🤷‍♂️

The "O" in "SFO" stands for "omfg I can't believe I'm having to defend and explain something like this- get a hobby, and at least do a sensible Google/Bing search before you correct me on Twitter like a jester in town square for all to see" 🃏🤡

There definitely are others - I think ABQ and ATL come to mind where I’ve seen locals refer to the area/city by that same code.

Chloe’s right about SFO though :)
    Aaron Parecki
Oh yea I think I've heard that about ATL before, but didn't know about ABQ!

I think I've said "SF" a grand total of like 4 times, and I 100% agree that if someone said "SFO" I would in no way assume they mean the city

Fully agree with this point. There is so much prior art about decentralization being ignored. But most of the fediverse/indieweb folks I see have not engaged with decentralization fans to say "we've got stuff that's better/cheaper/already works".

Yes and no, I know that I myself at least wouldn’t be happy to have the IndieWeb referenced as a “fediverse”, but then again, I’m a bit burnt after I implemented OStatus for Flattr back in the days only to see the very downside of a federated approach when it comes to longevity…
    Aaron Parecki
I've implemented ActivityPub directly into my website, so my website is its own ActivityPub instance in the Fediverse. So there's definitely some overlap and grey areas between the two, but yeah generally Fediverse refers to the ActivityPub model of many ppl on one instance.

@downey @Mastodon Let me be clear: I care that Mastodon as an end product is free software. I do not care if the tools used to create Mastodon pass a free software purity check. If a tool will make the job of creating Mastodon easier, I will prefer it. See: GitHub, Discord, and so on.

Cool cool, @Gargron moving all @Mastodon project discussion behind a proprietary walled garden that requires agreement with Microsoft terms of service (and their analytics tracking). Now THAT makes a ton of sense. 🤦‍♂️

Good. Less infrastructure for the project maintainers to maintain means more time to spend on the actual product. Running a Discourse instance isn't free, both in money and time.

I think one of the hugest things web3 people seem to be confused about is that somehow building systems that expect less trust will fundamentally fix problems of trust – it's a nihilist approach to systems engineering that speaks more to their psychology than any sound theory

@aaronpk Wrong: The Discourse project offers free hosting to maintainers and has for many years: https://free.discourse.group/

Shilling for Microsoft is pretty far afield from the #IndieWeb ....

    Aaron Parecki
I think you'll find most of the IndieWeb community is not the die-hard FOSS fans. Open source is important, but is not an end goal in and of itself. There's plenty of examples of not open source IndieWeb software that happily interoperates with the open source software.

@aaronpk Pretty sure moving to the proprietary walled garden GitHub where a project's data has no escape route fails at least 7/11 of the #IndieWeb principles.

    ❌ Own your data
    ❌ Make what you need
    ❌ Use what you make
    ❌ Open source your stuff
    ❌ Modularity
    ❌ Longevity
    ❌ Plurality

    Aaron Parecki
I just agree with gargron that the tooling around a project doesn't need to blindly follow FOSS just for the sake of it. But I do realize I'm sending this to floss.social https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/107419999666450567

I talk all the time to artists who say “I just want to support my work, and it seems like there’s an audience.” or individuals who say “I found a nice, welcoming community that’s having fun talking about art and tech.” Those are reasonable views. And we should engage with them.

I mean my laptop has 14gb free right now and XCode is 12.6gb. I did just see all the headlines about issues with XCode 13.2 so I guess I'm gonna put off this project until they get that sorted out.

Does Apple even let you publish something like that on their store? I saw that GPSLogger gave up on the Google Play store. I appreciate the privacy concerns with trackers but it'd be nice to have an exception for these "this data is for you" as opposed to adware.
    Aaron Parecki
There's a ton of apps like this, I don't think it's a problem. Someone ported my iOS app to Android recently even. Also from what I read in (your!) HN thread, the reason it was removed from the Google Play store had nothing to do with privacy? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24735159

@aaronpk Not literally that fast, but Swift has moved really fast over the years. Swift written not long ago probably won't build anymore where Objective-c I wrote 10 years ago still builds! (Though Apple framework changes will still break code in any language over time)

    Aaron Parecki
in any case it sounds like there's a bunch of bugs in the latest XCode version, so I'm going to hold off on doing anything until they release an update. But then I will report back on how it goes!
