@aaronpk Which sensor are you using? I'm looking to do something similar before winter (air quality gets hazardous around New Year where I live).

    Aaron Parecki
It's a PMS5003 sensor attached to esphome. They're mostly out of stock but you can find them on Amazon or Aliexpress if you're willing to wait a while for them to arrive.

That’s cool. And you need better filters. How are you scrubbing internal air? Now I’m really curious what the AQI is in my house and studio!!
    Aaron Parecki
I need filters at all! Just running the AC right now, but the exterior windows are super sealed and the apartment hallway air is filtered

Uh, not super sealed. 172 AQI is still utter shite. You need a filter, man.
    Aaron Parecki
Well the hallway is like 240 so...

If the entire East Coast looked like Mordor outside and it smelled like a barbecue every time you left your house we would not stop hearing the end of it. I don’t know if people not on the West Coast understand how bad it is

Air filter duct tape trash bag fan
    Aaron Parecki
That implies I have an air filter lying around. Believe me if there was one anywhere nearby in this town I would have done this already.

I saw someone on here say they lived through a wildfire and now their signal for leaving is when birds start falling out of the sky dead, and instead of thinking "my god, this is horrific" I thought "dead birds, good, I'll check for that"

@aaronpk What do you use for inside quality readings? I’ve seen a few reports from indoors. I have to assume the quality inside my house is no better than others, but I’d like to know for sure. (I am running the fan of my furnace which is equipped with an American Standard Accuclean integrates electrostatic filter. M)

    Aaron Parecki
I had a PMS5003 sensor that I hooked up to my home automation platform. It's the sensor used in many retail AQI meters

Yikes. Seems like you've found a project at least. How you holding up otherwise?

    Aaron Parecki
Fine, just not happy about spending 48+ hours in this air, kinda worried about the possible side effects of this a few weeks from now

Yikes! Is https://www.airnow.gov an accurate indicator of air quality? If so, ours is pretty good!

The year is 2020. Ash has blocked out the sun. My friends are evacuating out of fire zones. Pants are a distant memory. A podcaster asks me over Zoom, “So what’s it like to be a woman in tech?”
