Oof. Sounds like a terrible game.
So maybe not even related to NBC? Just people trying to get SEO juice by linking to them? I don't get the rules of this gross house of cards.
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah, I think the idea is to clone articles on popular topics from major new sites, and send them all pingbacks to get the back-links to boost the ranking of the spam site. SEO can DIAF.

    Good lord.

I did one quick chat for an NBC news piece and they linked to my website.

Now my WebMentions are a dumpster fire - filled with all their crappy, low-quality syndicated copies of the article.

Counted 38 bunk domains all pointing back to the canonical NBC domain
    Aaron Parecki
also fwiw, that kind of spam usually comes in via pingback, so you can just not include the pingback tag to webmention.io and accept only webmentions instead

@aaronpk Fair enough - that is a strange requirement.

Probably some sort of anti-spam countermeasure, since it's just another barrier to spammers.

Can we just use SMTP for decentralized social networking? It already solves many hard parts: reputation & spam elimination, proven scale, rich content, DMs. What's missing: a standard way for followers to subscribe, a public profile/timeline, and a purpose-built client for users.

I'm not pointing any fingers, but I've seen a dramatic increase in bots and bot spam under my tweets over the past month.

5 frustrations only live streamers will fully understand...

    1. Losing internet while live streaming
    2. Adult/Sex spam bots
    3. Purchasing a new piece of gear only to find out the updated version is coming out in a couple weeks
    4. A closet full of product boxes
    5. Lighting

If I buy an 800 number (toll free number in the US) and route it my phone instead of my real number am I less likely to get spam calls? 🤔
    Aaron Parecki
I actually had 877-99-AARON a long long time ago and it forwarded to my google voice number. But this was way before the spam call problem got so bad. Now I wish I had kept it!

I have found it fascinating watching a substantial number of web3/crypto pushers come to the dawning realization that they're not misunderstood, they're loathed. Realize that they had no idea the degree of ad spam, bots, and over-hyped shilling that everyone else is dealing with.

Dear @Eventbrite, I have an account, so please make sure it is not possible for other people to sign me up for events with only my email address. I've been added to dozens of events over the last two weeks and it's an interesting new vector for spam. @EventbriteHelp

The BazaCall campaigns forgo malicious links or attachments in favor of phone numbers that users are misled into calling. Call center agents instruct users to download BazarLoader. The lack of malicious elements challenges typical spam detection methods: https://msft.it/6016nWc3m

I just received a two factor authentication SMS from Google that included an ad. Google's own Messages SMS app flagged it as spam.

    What a shameful money grab.

Back in the day, AOL’s abuse team was a client. Email from them kept getting spam blocked, as it came from a non-AOL netblock, had a bunch of “sketchy” keywords and @ aol addresses that didn’t patch validation on their consumer site.

randomly decided to check my spam folder today and found a week-old email from a client asking if they could pay an invoice using @Wise and asked for my bank account number.

*of course* that got flagged as spam 🤦‍♂️

I managed to keep one of the sales callers on the phone long enough to ask where they got my info. Turns out they use @zoominfo which thankfully has an "opt out" process. https://www.zoominfo.com/update/profile Hopefully this stops the unrelenting sales calls from suspicious looking numbers!

Feature request: GMail filtering of not just spam, but nazis, too. Not for (just) my inbox, but for the millions of people who are getting inundated with toxic garbage every day.
    Aaron Parecki
I was thinking about this the other day... if anyone was in a position to “fix” Twitter, it’s Gmail with their spam filter. It doesn’t assume any one piece of content is absolute spam or not, spam is relative to the recipient.
