@aaronpk Brilliant, this is almost like reading the debate between Elon Musk and the Site Engineers at Twitter over how it all works.

    Aaron Parecki
haha that sounds like an excellent question to ask from the next version of ChatGPT once it's been trained on 2022 events

The time for an easily self-hosted personal CMS, designed around the Fediverse and IndieWeb is now.

No, I don’t mean hacking it into a legacy CMS like WordPress. It needs to be modern, and completely focused.

(The CMS I use, Known, had the right idea, about 5 years too early).
    Aaron Parecki
This has been on my todo list for -- checks notes -- literally 8 years.

My website is essentially the prototype for it, but it is in no way accessible to folks, both from the server admin side or the user experience side. I have a long list of what I want to improve, but sadly never took the time to do it.

Oh man, #airdrop is the thing I miss most since leaving the #iPhone behind. My #MacBook feels a little less capable without it, haha. Snapdrop.net has been pretty handy, except for it requiring a shared wifi network.

    Aaron Parecki
airdrop is great when it works. It does sometimes completely just fail, and there's no real way to troubleshoot it or force it to reconnect or whatever.

I understand that people keep saying #DieHard is the true Christmas movie. Having seen it for the first time on a transcontinental flight last month I can honestly say that there is a taste shortage going around.

    Aaron Parecki
lol we tried watching it for the first time last year and got through 20 minutes and gave up πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I clicked β€œnot interested in this ad” for perhaps 5 times already, and every time I open Twitter I see it again.
I really am not the target audience for that service, what’s the point? Was this a ploy to get me to retweet/amplify this? It worked πŸ˜›
    Aaron Parecki

@aaronpk it's probably doable with AppleScript, but I haven't used AppleScript in probably 20 years to know for sure

@aaronpk I imagine having a "scaffolded" structure generated automatically and just double checking it is way less work than having to write it down all by yourself πŸ‘

    Aaron Parecki
Yeah it definitely took a little bit of copy editing to get the summaries right, but it's a lot quicker than doing it all from scratch. Plus I want captions for the videos anyway so I am also using the result of that middle step!

WV temps swing wildly in a normal year, but the shift last night was especially crazy: from 45 degrees to -2 in about 6-7 hours. And it’ll be in the sixties again next week πŸ™ƒ
    Aaron Parecki
oof we had a 20 degree drop in that time and that was bad enough

@doktrock feels less Space Opera, more pure sci-fi if that makes sense!

    Aaron Parecki
Ohh how far have you got with it? No spoilers, but I've been enjoying it even if there's some pretty wild tile jumps to keep track of

    AI is cool.

I just finished recording and editing 20 new video lessons for a course.

Uploaded the videos to Sonix and it created a (mostly) accurate transcript.

Uploaded the transcript to ChatGPT and asked it to create a summary of the lesson for the landing page!
    Aaron Parecki
I feel like this is particularly notable because while I enjoy explaining things, I really don't enjoy creating the "wrapper" content around it (like title and thumbnail on youtube, or summary of a video course lesson), so I'm happy to let the AI get me 90% of the way there!

I feel the same way. I recently purchased an RG351v in hopes of playing the games that I loved as a kid. It lasted all of two days and now the device sits in my drawer :/

    Aaron Parecki
wow that one looks nice too!

The games I liked as a kid were: snake, Commander Keen, Warcraft, Starcraft, SimCity 2000, and that's pretty much it. My favorite Switch game is Mario Kart.

But now my games are building little indieweb tools and stuff.

@aaronpk I know, right!? I guess there's no rules about what you can name yourself... but if it's the opposite maybe it crosses the line.
    Aaron Parecki
you know who does have rules about what they can name things... pharmaceutical companies!

It's not something I hear people talking about, so I'll just throw it out there.

    #OpenAI isn't open.
It's received $1 Billion in funding from some of the biggest names in venture capital.

What happens when these investors influence the output of #ChatGPT? How would we know there's a bias?

We should be literally afraid of one company, who owes so much to so many other entities, being seen as a future all-knowing answer source. These VCs will get a return one way or another.
    Aaron Parecki
when I first heard about OpenAI I was like oh cool so it's like open source AI? oh, no it's not open source, but at least the API must be open then? no? I have to sign up for a paid plan? πŸ€”

Anybody have advice on good bookkeeping software for a small #indieweb business? Is QuickBooks really the best game in town?

    Aaron Parecki
This year I switched from QuickBooks (Desktop) to YNAB, which isn't exactly business bookkeeping software but I am choosing to use it that way. So far it's been nice, but we'll see how I feel about it once I have to send reports to my CPA.
