Hi Aaron, thanks for reporting. This issue should now be fixed, but do let us know if you're still having trouble.
    Aaron Parecki
Update: This morning it now accepts my password, but when I go to send email, sending doesn't actually work. The draft email never disappears like it's been sent.

Just being curious: why do you want to use/ are using gmail in the first place? I know you for your expertise in indie web and the like.
    Aaron Parecki
Also remember indieweb is not all about self-hosting, it's about online identity ownership. If I own my domain, I can move providers, which is true of websites as well as email.

Fair question. Primarily: email != web, and the effort to self-host email is far greater than that of websites. Part of why I'm so frustrated with this situation is I had a good setup going where I am using my own domain as my email, it just happens to be powered by Gmail.

Hmm. What if you do ssl instead of tls over 465?
    Aaron Parecki
Same authentication failed message. I've tried every combination of TLS/SSL and port number in that list.

They made some breaking change this morning, and rolled it back, but apparently didn't roll it back far enough.

This is Gmail itself though. Also Mail.app now goes through the Google OAuth flow to set it up so it wouldn't even be testing the same thing. That's why I went and found an SMTP client in PHP and tried sending an email through that and it worked fine.
    Aaron Parecki
so that tells me it's a problem with @Gmail's SMTP client talking to Gmail's SMTP server

http://Mail.app lets you turn on verbose logging in connection doctor, not sure if this app does…

Did you try changing the port to 465? 587 is supposedly for nonssl-only, but can be upgraded with a starttls command. It could they’re not accepting auth on 587 anymore because of some screwy thing around auth before the starttls.
    Aaron Parecki
465 + TLS results in "Couldn't reach server. Please double-check the server and port number."

587 + TLS from my PHP script works fine.

I'm still having trouble. This works when sending email from a script, but Gmail can't talk to Gmail's own SMTP servers right now using the same account info.
    Aaron Parecki
    so far I have:

    • changed my password
    • reset my two-factor-auth
    • deleted and re-added this account in Gmail
    • tried every combination of TLS and port number

I can send email via SMTP from a small script, I just can't get Gmail to send via SMTP between accounts.

Are you seriously claiming that twitter invented social media?

Cause I was working full time in social media before twitter started. Or did I misunderstand you?
    Aaron Parecki
Depends on your definition of social media: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media#History

According to that, none of us were even alive at the origins of social media.

Social media was designed for folks to tell their friends what they were up to and what bands they like.

That's a very good question, it was still online when i looked a few years ago, but now i can't find it.
    Aaron Parecki
oddly the audio download link links to a URL that redirects to archive.org which then says it’s not found

Is there a way to make FaceTime NOT ring on a Mac, but still have it logged in so I can place outgoing calls on it?
    Aaron Parecki
Phone calls too plz. When I get a call now, no less than five devices around me light up and make noises.

Make a whole bunch of videos and hone your workflow into a knife edge.

I don’t do fancy edits, and I have everything set up and ready to go so just a flick of a couple switches and I’m good to go.
    Aaron Parecki
I’m about 75% of the way to having a permanent recording setup in place, it’s already saved me time even tho it’s not perfect.

I still struggle with how scripted the dialogue should be. The less scripted the more editing. The more scripted, the worse the final result.

Oh no, 90% of the work is done before I hit record, that means editing is super easy.

    Aaron Parecki
also what voodoo do you use that allows you to start filming a video the night before it’ll be released?? you must really have your post-production workflow down!

I tend to spend 3x more time editing than filming.

Dang I get both my new lens and new microphone tomorrow.

But I need to shoot tomorrow’s video tonight....do I risk waiting or should I be responsible and keep to schedule.

@photojoseph @aaronpk I am a novice to these techs. Any idea why do I get this greenish screen with my new (inexpensive) camcorder connected to ATEM Mini?
    Aaron Parecki
I've seen a similar problem outputting from HDMI devices into certain monitors. Turns out HDMI has two different color modes, RGB and YUV, and some devices only support one or the other. If the camera has a setting for that, it might fix it, but I'm betting it does not.

When you compose the thumbnail but forget you set your camera to 4:3 for some family pictures...and you remember right when you sit down and import everything into photoshop. 😭
    Aaron Parecki
I’ve definitely had to “content-aware fill” some photos because of that 🤦‍♂️
