fyi, I enabled importing again with some aggressive back-off strategies, so hopefully some photos get through periodically.

    Aaron Parecki
Another update! I reworked the OwnYourGram UI to let you import a single photo from its Instagram URL. This should get around the rate limiting since it's mostly been rate limiting profile fetches which is how OwnYourGram finds your new photos. So if you log in, you should be able to import photos individually right now.

Ugh. I used to have a tiny Air. That was great. Too bad it’s slow AF these days.

That was such a good generation of computers! I used one of those as my only computer for many years! I'm so sad Apple has discontinued everything below 13" now too πŸ˜•

Travelers β€” is a 13” MacBook Pro usable in economy class? β€˜Cause the 15” is nearly impossible to use.
    Aaron Parecki
It's tight but doable. I definitely prefer using my 12" MacBook on planes.

Hm, after reading their wiki and FAQ, I don't see the value in supporting IndieAuth instead of just allowing the user to specify an arbitrary OpenID Connect provider?
    Aaron Parecki
Most OpenID Connect providers require pre-registration of clients, which kind of defeats the purpose. Here's some more background: https://aaronparecki.com/2018/07/07/7/oauth-for-the-open-web

Also me: *books themself up through the entire month of October*

    Aaron Parecki
omg also me. I've been trying to tell as many people as I can that I'll be home the whole month of December so that I might actually stick to it.

Yes, and one of my goals is to, while adhering to Apple’s business practices and style, get involved where I can. I’d really appreciate it if you could publicly or privately let me know about venues you think would be relevant to my team.

Yes, come to the next Internet Identity Workshop, or even the next OAuth group's meeting! (November in Singapore) We would all gladly welcome any engagement by Apple in this space!

😱 Came home from a trip to a failed hard drive on one of my home servers. Time to put my backup system to the test!

πŸ’Ύ New drive is on its way, warranty return for the old drive is started.

☁️ Once the new drive arrives, I'll attempt to restore it from my local backup. With any luck, that'll work. Otherwise I'll have to get a drive mailed to me from Backblaze.

    πŸš€ Here we go!
    Aaron Parecki
Update: new drive is restoring from my local backup. Currently at 250gb out of 4tb after a few hours. Slow but steady progress.

This is why I always have 3 copies of everything! I wouldn't want to be in a situation where my backup copy fails while restoring it to my main drive, leaving me with nothing.

$10k for an authentication bypass by removing β€œemployee” from the scope parameter in an oauth url which led to access all internal services with a normal user account.

    oh I see, it's a google thing: https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/architecture/app-shell

yeah I'm with @adactio on this. this is a great way to put yourself into the mindset of a native app developer, but is *far* from the only way to make a good PWA experience.

Listening to @JoubranJad’s @FronteersConf talk, and I’m afraid I fundamentally disagree with his assertion that an app shell is a prerequisite for a good progressive web app. It’s one approach. Other excellent approaches are available.

    Aaron Parecki
not being there to see the talk, what exactly does "app shell" mean?

Also if you complain in my comments section saying you demand unbiased videos I’m sorry but I assume you are a child.

No human being is unbiased, all you can do is state mitigating factors upfront (sponsored videos etc) and enjoy making your content.

I replaced Monocle's Font Awesome SVG+JS icons with their SVG sprite icons and it loads soooo much faster now! There was always a visible delay while the JS loaded in the SVG icons. Now it's just handled by the browser with no JS.

I always assumed that it was a slow network causing the issues, but I opened up the browser tools to check and it turns out the slowdown was happening while rendering the page, not when fetching external data. Goes to show it's a good idea to open up the browser tools once in a while to check out what's happening under the hood!
    Aaron Parecki
It looks like switching to no-JS icons in monocle totally fixed the issues I was having with it! Sometimes when I opened a page it used to block on all interactions like marking things read or favoriting for a while. I didn't realize that it was the icon JS that was blocking it! Now that the icons don't require JS, it's free to start handling user interaction sooner and I can scroll and mark read even before the rest of the assets are loaded!
