The modern way of running a SaaS:

    1. catch thousands of users with free accounts and features that are too good to be true.
    2. start charging for features that have been free before.

Unpopular opinion: this is just dishonest growth hacking.

wow you're right, that was unpopular. I totally agree tho fwiw.

Lazyweb: I’m in the market for an extremely compact travel power strip, especially for use on airplanes that feature very fiddly, loose power outlets that many power bricks fall out of easily. Shoot me some suggestions if you have them!
    Aaron Parecki
ugh airplane outlets have been driving me up the wall lately! I think the solution is to get a plug that's at a 90 degree angle so that the cord hangs straight down instead of out first. But also the plane outlets support every country's plug so maybe getting a small UK power strip is the best since that's the grippiest one?

Hello from your Captioner! I've been learning a lot from all the speakers. Wow. 😀 My coworker is not impressed with the wakeup time - it's kind of early here. But that's not an issue for me when there are such wonderful speakers. ❤️ #ViewSourceConf @whitecoatcapxg

@aaronpk signed in with my own site (https://glenn.thedixons.net) which is set up for IndieAuth, and my site is connected to Micro.blog, but not as a paying account. So how do I implement micropub in a way that Aperture recognizes?

    Aaron Parecki
Your site will need a Micropub endpoint so that the reader apps have a place to send likes and replies to. Otherwise where would they live?

It looks like you're using Eleventy now? I know some folks have done that before but don't have the details off hand. I'll ask in chat if anyone has links they can add to the wiki page. https://indieweb.org/Eleventy

@aaronpk I have a question about Monocle. I have tried using both it and Together with Baffle connected to Newsblur. I have also tried Monocle with Aperture. But so far I have zero options to favorite or reply to anything I am reading. In other words, just like any other feed reader out there. What am I missing? Is there something I have not set up on my own site? Genuinely confused and a bit frustrated tbh...

    Aaron Parecki
The website you use to sign in to the reader will need to support Micropub in order for those buttons to show up. I don't think that works with Baffle/Newsblur, but you can use it with your Micro.blog account!

Have you seen last week's video? I showed you how to use Apple's Keynote to create motion graphics for Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Resolve… whatever! It's pretty awesome. After watching, if you want to learn more about using Keynote, let me know! https://photojoseph.com/ep490
    Aaron Parecki
If nothing else, this has inspired me to use more motion graphics in my actual Keynote presentations

Ya that’s why I have opted for keeping an iPhone so I can retain the same number with normal iMessage support and stuff
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah, no iMessage on my number is definitely weird. Also some companies like Uber and US Bank refuse to believe my number is real.

Will convert my phone number to google voice number and just use google voice for phone calls and non iMessage texts.
    Aaron Parecki
As someone whose primary number has been a google voice number for the last 10 years, I can say I like it but does come with some odd side effects

Seriously considering trading in my iPhone 7 for the 11... That wide angle lens looks amazinggg should I do it? 😂
    Aaron Parecki
Yes! That's gonna be a huge upgrade! I was using a 6S until last year, I'm on the XS now so I can't really justify upgrading again even tho I kinda want to!

    @aaronpk
while this wasn't in #Amsterdam, and I ended up walking with my bike for the most part IIRC, this is how I picked up a free #microwave here in #Bodø, #Norway:

    https://mastodon.social/media/fIxN-dpbarbGS1h8u3k

I attached a vegetable #crate to the back of my #bike and stuck the microwave oven in it. Forgot to bring more rope to properly secure the oven in it though, but it survived the trip, and has served us well for over a year now :)

    Aaron Parecki
Excellent! I've seen so many crates like that attached to bikes here!

@aaronpk The largest item I've managed is a mattress, but to be honest, I did have to get off my bike and walk with it to my apartment.

wow, a three color eink display? haven't seen that before
    Aaron Parecki
"three color" -- black, red, and white (no color). kind of misleading IMO.

I actually used the "two color" version, black and white.

thanks! what's the epaper display you were using?
    Aaron Parecki
It was the Waveshare "HAT" version for the Pi Zero. The only thing I didn't like about it is that the whole contraption ends up being almost an inch thick. I'm going to try it again using an esp32-e-paper combo device that's as thin as just one board!

@aaronpk hey! the eink/raspizerow thing you showed at XOXO, is it open-sourced somewhere? would love to do something similar
    Aaron Parecki
I haven't published the actual code I used, but it's all based on the examples from Waveshare anyway: https://github.com/waveshare/e-Paper

The real work was in gathering the data in the first place, then it's a matter of drawing rectangles on the screen.

When you finish a PhD in computer science, they take you to a special room and explain that you must never use recursion in real life. Its only purpose is to make programming hard for undergrads.

Hey, do you ever close out of an app, only to scroll through your list of apps and reflexively open the exact same app again?

    Maybe I'm the only one.
    Aaron Parecki
Sometimes I scroll thru all my apps and put my phone away and then open the exact same app on my iPad 🤦‍♂️
