Dark Patterns at Scale: Findings from a Crawl of 11K Shopping Websites

    June 26th, 2019

1,841 instances of dark patterns on ecommerce sites, in the categories of sneaking, urgency, misdirection, social proof, scarcity, obstruction, and forced action. You can browse this overview, read the paper, or look at the raw data.

We conducted a large-scale study, analyzing ~53K product pages from ~11K shopping websites to characterize and quantify the prevalence of dark patterns.

This doesn't seem like a problem unique to the web. Plenty of these tricks are done at physical stores too!

Some days I want to get a job at Apple just so I can peruse my own early Radar bugs. They probably go back to to when I was 18 (I’m 44 now). A part of my youth I can’t revisit.

@aaronpk If my schedule this weekend had allowed it, I would have loved to attend #IndieWebSummit remotely.

Will the keynotes/sessions be recorded? There's a couple of them I'd be really sad to miss out on!

    Aaron Parecki
Yes! We try to record everything and take good notes too!

@jackyalcine There seems to be no limit to the demand for new brew pubs in Portland. I thought we had reached Peak Microbrew, but lately if feels like every corner has a new establishment.

    Aaron Parecki
For real! I went to a new cider place last night too!

Looks like @United have switched equipment on me. I’ve been bumped out of my nice bulkhead seat all the way to the back of the bus. I at least managed to rearrange things to get an aisle, they’d originally stuck me in a middle for my sins, but it’s going to be a long flight.
    Aaron Parecki
That happened to me last week on @IcelandAir 😔 Got stuck in the window seat for an 8hr flight when I had chosen an aisle.

TIP 4: Set aside some time every single day at the same time to answer email. During this time slot just plow through whatever email you have remaining even if it seems like a massive job.
    Aaron Parecki
every time I do that, I end up spending the entire day answering emails or dealing with whatever it was the emails said I had to do

oh. Crap. Yeah. I need to talk to @aaronpk about that. I don't think it's labeled for screen reader users like myself; I can't actually view the state of the toggle.
    Aaron Parecki
oh shoot! I assumed the CSS framework I'm using handled that! Tho also TBH I didn't even remember that checkbox existed.

I wrote a new blog post about how to fix the internet. Maybe people would read it if RSS was still cool! https://pauljmiller.com/posts/how-to-fix-the-internet.html

Aside from a few minor differences, you've described almost exactly the way IndieWeb social networking works. Short notice, but you should join us at IndieWeb Summit next weekend if you'd like to join a whole community of people working on this! https://2019.indieweb.org/summit

man, microformats was such a bust. wasted a whole year adding made up tags to projects thinking it’d enable some future neuro-web to emerge.
    Aaron Parecki
That's exactly what it did! Not for magic SEO juice, but for something much more interesting!

@aaronpk are you calling out tech in general or specific to Micro.blog?

    Aaron Parecki
I'm not sure what you mean? Micro.blog doesn't even mention "decentralized" on the home page.

I grew up cycling everywhere, and my observation is that America absolutely doesn’t understand bicycles even a little bit at all.
    Aaron Parecki
This is very true, and a bicycle is my primary mode of transport in Portland, which won most bike-friendly city in the US multiple years in a row.

I thought I was already following you!

Random question, has the taxi situation between the Ontario airport and Redlands improved in the last 4 years? Last I remember there was literally one guy who ran a cab between the airport and HQ.

I do purges regularly, with a bias towards unfollowing white guys. Sadly that means I've purged you like three times. Nothing personal!

I couldn't see how I could automate my workflow with it.

I got the impression I should be able to (in the superfeedr thing?), but I couldn't work it out.

    If it's possible, then it's definitely a docs issue!😀
    Aaron Parecki
Now that you mention it, I remember that it doesn't actually do exactly the same thing. It requires you already know at least the domain of the thing you're sending the webmention to. I should probably add support for sending all webmentions.

There's also https://telegraph.p3k.io - but I couldn't see a way that a user could tell these services: I've blogged, make the webmention run. I wanted something like a webhook. Plus, I like building stuff :) and I got to practise new skills (particularly around docs)
    Aaron Parecki
Don’t get me wrong, I’m super excited to see another Webmention service, but I am genuinely curious how Telegraph doesn’t look like it does what you described since that’s my exact goal with it. I clearly have a few things to learn about docs from you!

I'm sure there are dozens of hot takes by now, on both sides of it. I've been mostly offline the last two days so I just now found that ad.
