4/ In short, the process to โ€œown your contentโ€ is currently in the chasm, and wonโ€™t cross over into mass adoption until we make it *way* easier. That said, I like this setup a lot, and am encouraged that itโ€™s a thing that is now possible.
    Aaron Parecki
๐ŸŽ‰ Welcome! Definitely agree this needs to be easier, but it's slow progres. The fact that you were able to get this far is an excellent demo of how much easier it's become compared to 5 years ago!

I'm thinking about getting the Hue smart bulbs for my bedroom because it seems like it would help to be able to dim and brighten the lights around bed time and waking. Anyone using them or other smart bulbs? Thoughts?

    Aaron Parecki
Hue bulbs are my fav, because they don't rely on the internet to work, everything runs locally in your house network. I've been using them for like 6-7 years now!

Yeah that may be easiest ๐Ÿ˜ญ I was hoping there was some service that allows unauthenticated requests but with arbitrary paths cause then you could write to like http://example.com/longrandomstringthatisasecret/key = value. But mebbe I don't understand exactly
    Aaron Parecki
    lol twitter autolinked that.

    /longrandomstringthatisuniqueperapp/key = value

I'm regretting not just standing up a server with a single endpoint at this point lol

I feel like if I explained what I'm doing you'd understand why I'm so limited, but I really only need to store a single thing and the simplest solution at this point if mLab doesn't work for it is to write my own service on my own db ๐Ÿ˜‚
    Aaron Parecki
tbh it sounds like the simplest thing is to have each app generate its own long random string and use that as basically the key for writing and reading data. And this coming from someone who is clearly a fan of OAuth.

I have this same problem. It's never worked for me when switching timezones, unless I very carefully choose when I sync with the phone and when I change my timezone. It overwrites data if I don't do it carefully.

I should work on properly ingesting Twitter links so I can fully own my likes, reshares and replies on that site. For now, I need to look into a โ€œsilo-based translatorโ€ to the IndieWeb.

    Aaron Parecki
I stopped favoriting things directly on Twitter a long time ago! I always favorite stuff because either it shows up in my reader and it's just one click, or on the off chance I do click on a tweet, my browser bookmarklet also gives me one click access to favorite something. Way easier than trying to pull my Twitter favs back from their site.

@ablaze @aaronpk Ah ok, that makes sense. I did some research on it couple of years back, and FAA always deferred to individual airlines to make the call on that. The airline has the authority to disallow calls, but it's not an FAA regulation. Some in-flight companies (like GoGo) explicitly forbids VoIP calls in their ToCs (at least used to) that you agree to when you join their network.

    Aaron Parecki
I'm surprised they don't just block Zoom since it's one of the biggest ones. They do block YouTube.

@ablaze @aaronpk Did you by any chance grab the pamphlet/page from her? I'm not aware of an actual VoIP ban by FAA, but flight attendants sometimes confuse it with regular cell calls. Although, many carriers block VoIP calls via their in-flight WiFi, due to noise complaints, etc, as well as bandwidth concerns. Some technologies work around that, but if VoIP is "blocked" (as far as they're concerned) and you're on a call, you're more likely to be mistaken for doing a cell call.

    Aaron Parecki
Yeah I'm curious about this too. I couldn't find anything while googling (on the plane). I'll probably look a bit more tonight.

@aaronpk Yes, VOIP calls. I actually ignored her at first, and she came back shaking with rage and waving a printed FAA page in her hand and told me she would tell the captain I was ignoring her instructions if I didn't stop. I stopped.

    Aaron Parecki
Holy crap that's intense! Well I guess I won't be doing that anymore.

Spent the afternoon at the city permit office researching building codes and land use review. There's a lot of parallels between building codes and software specs.

Can you imagine if there was a similar permitting process for building websites and apps?
    Aaron Parecki
what if companies had to get a demolition permit before they could shut down a website

@aaronpk Last time I took a call on a plane, the flight attendant interrupted me and told me I was violating FAA regulations and subject to a $25,000 fine if I didn't hang up immediately.

    Aaron Parecki
hah wait what. My phone was still in airplane mode, no cellular service at all. Or is this specifically about VOIP too?

    1) this crap still exists even when the website is hosted by medium but served from a custom domain, so that won't stop it everywhere

    2) that's not the point

    Last day at Mozilla today.

Just a couple of weeks shy of 13 years (!?!!), I've decided to keep pushing for a free and open internet in other ways in different places.

That would be amazing! I'm always looking for good music libraries to use as background music in videos and podcasts.

You could try something that Kevin MacLeod does, which is to make all the music available Creative Commons attribution, and then also sell a downloadable pack of all the music for some amount. That way you'll get your name mentioned any time people use it in videos and podcasts, and if someone wants to give you some cash, they have a way to do that which also ends up being more convenient for them by having all the music already downloaded when they need it.
