yum install java-1.8.0-openjdk-headless # your OS doesn't offer separate Java from the browser plugin?
    Aaron Parecki
I haven't had a Java browser plugin in ages thankfully. macOS.

Also, the two leading xml editor both run on the JRE. So how did you get that Epub file in the first place?
    Aaron Parecki
@isaac32767 Generator? I'm creating it by hand. It's quite a mess of various XML formats and namespaces with no meaningful significance

This is great news for home theater enthusiasts who use Apple TV! Now all we need is better audio support :) https://twitter.com/joshtidsbury/status/925051189993070592

@aaronpk is that a chain store that might have a Montreal location? Iโ€™d love to grab some more ABA books, but shipping to Canada is super expensive.

    Aaron Parecki
Not sure, it was called "Swipe Books on Advertising and Design" which sounds pretty small!

So our Sonos locked us out this morning until we let it update its firmware. This is a dark UI pattern which strongly suggests they are holding the system hostage until I agree to let them remove features or add anti-features like sharing what we listen to or surveiling our home network. Anybody know of an alternative, free/open source Sonos firmware?

    Aaron Parecki
ugh I hate when apps and devices do this. There should always be a "later" option.

Hey @altitudetech, I backed your Sensly Kickstarter campaign way back in 2015 but you never shipped me my Sensely HAT. I see you have them in stock on your website, how about sending me one? Or refunding my pledge?

    Aaron Parecki
ugh that's the worst. That happened to me with that smart thermos thing. They're sold at the apple store now to rub it in.

    Seagates?
    Aaron Parecki
@ricfink A mix of Seagate and WD, but itโ€™s the Synology thatโ€™s failed twice. The third Synology has been fine so far tho!

I recently had to RMA my device twice because the controller kept failing. The drives were all fine each time tho.
    Aaron Parecki
At this point I'm thinking a couple USB 4TB drives that rsync to another set that sync to Backblaze is a better option. Fewer moving parts.

@mattb I have a 5x4TB RAID6 (2 redundant) but IME the hardware around the drives fails more often than the drives themselves.

I've done conversions for .epub/.mobi before and have some infrastructure for it. Let me know if you want/need help.
    Aaron Parecki
Thanks! I actually just finished the technical side of it this morning. Turns out it was more about doing things like writing conditional text for things like "the figure above" instead of "figure 1.4" since the figure numbering happened in the HTML->PDF toolchain step. I think I have a finished epub and mobi file now, so I just have to figure out the distribution step through Lulu.com now. (It's also made slightly complicated by the rev share agreement, so I can't just go wild with distribution or direct online sales of it.)
