Yes! There's a handful of technologies that enable exactly this kind of thing! Check out the Wordpress page on the IndieWeb wiki for a start: https://indieweb.org/Wordpress

The technology that enables comments to work across blogs is called Webmention, and there's a plugin for Wordpress too! https://wordpress.org/plugins/webmention/

Feel free to drop by the chat if you'd like help getting started with any of this! https://indieweb.org/discuss

WHAT KIND OF MAGIC IS THIS?! Is this accessible to humble bloggers? (maybe continue on my blog or yours?)
    Aaron Parecki
@cvoxel Yes! There are some Wordpress plugins! I'll leave more info as a comment on your blog post!

    Let’s replace @twitter with something much better. https://cpbotha.net/2016/11/19/lets-replace-twitter-with-something-much-better/ (user-controlled, decentralized) @WordPress #WordPress

@cvoxel that's exactly what the #indieweb community is doing! This tweet was posted from my own blog!

I'm actually very curious specifically what tools you think would be useful.
    Aaron Parecki
@christi3k I feel like we've got the indie web building blocks in place now, and are ready to apply them to more than just blogs

Right, we have to make tools people actually need and can use. I'm not talking usual indieweb stuff here.

Busting social media silos and re-decentralizing the web is one of the most important things technologists can be helping with now.
    Aaron Parecki
@christi3k I think so too! (This note also posted at https://aaronparecki.com/2016/11/10/8/)

OK, that's neat. Thanks. So the "rel" would be in the source doc; what do I read to find out common "rel" usages?
    Aaron Parecki
@leastfixedpoint Check out https://indieweb.org/responses for common uses. Lots of Microformats2 use with Webmention, enabling cross-site comments.

So with WebMention there are source=...&target=... params, but no rel=... or property=... param. I wonder what the story there is!
    Aaron Parecki
@leastfixedpoint The Webmention is just the notification that one URL links to another. What the link means is described at that URL.

Hi, I'm Aaron Parecki, Director of Identity Standards at Okta, and co-founder of IndieWebCamp. I maintain oauth.net, write and consult about OAuth, and participate in the OAuth Working Group at the IETF. I also help people learn about video production and livestreaming. (detailed bio)

I've been tracking my location since 2008 and I wrote 100 songs in 100 days. I've spoken at conferences around the world about owning your data, OAuth, quantified self, and explained why R is a vowel. Read more.
