I might be slightly addicted to #3DPrinting... "I wish I had some way to hang my headphones on this monitor without blocking the screen" Thirty minutes later I designed and printed this little hook!
I did it, I painted all the rackmount gear white! This is more or less the finished result of my new streaming desk all wired up and functional! I even replaced the fans in the VideoHub so that it's much much quieter. Thanks to the VideoHub, I can electronically rewire the desk, routing any video source like my computer monitor to any of the displays, and each input on the ATEM Mini is assignable to any video source. The back of this is still a bit of a mess, but my 3D printed converter rack did a decent job of cleaning things up a bit. The Stream Deck is connected to a Raspberry Pi in the rack so that it's always on even without my computer there. It's rigged up to control the studio and ceiling lights as well as the heater. #blackmagicdesign #atemmini #deskporn #homeautomation #streamdeck #raspberrypi #livestreaming #streamingrig #overkill
It's pretty amazing being able to go from an idea in your head to a finished product in just a day. I've been spending some time learning 3D modeling and 3D printing and designed this modular stackable rack for these #BlackmagicDesign converter boxes. I've really been enjoying using the 3D modeling software on my iPad to take advantage of the finger gestures for navigation and the Apple Pencil for the actual modeling. It's worked surprisingly better than I was expecting it to, probably because the last time I used any 3D modeling software was like 20 years ago. Each shelf in the rack is its own piece, so you can stack as many as you want. The top shelf is a special print for the top cover to fit into. The base is slanted 9 degrees so that when this is set on top of my device in the rack mount the stack stands up straight. #3DPrinting #PrusaMini #Shapr3D
the great thing about Zoom karaoke is nobody sings in sync anyway so you don't even notice the Zoom delay
For the past week or so I've been busy painting my studio gear white to better match the rest of the studio look! 😍 Turns out with some spray enamel you can make almost anything bright white! Next I have to decide whether to void my warranty on the two remaining pieces of gear here (one pictured, the other arriving in a couple weeks) and paint those white as well 🤔
Assigning colors to Gmail labels really makes my inbox look a lot more fun. I don't know why I didn't do this ages ago.
It's 2020 and there are no rules anymore so I put cheese on the *outside* of my grilled cheese sandwich
All my HDMI cords are now sorted by length and connector combo (full HDMI, micro, mini) and hung up on the inside of my closet door and this is so much nicer than cramming them into various drawers! Next up: USB

Much nicer air today!
Went on a bike ride down to the waterfront today. The air isn't all that much worse outside than inside this point especially with an N95 mask, so thought it'd be a fun adventure. It's hard to describe just how bad the air is, but this is what it actually looks like in Portland right now. I know it looks like a cheap Instagram filter but this is pretty much the real color outside.
I have now resorted to wearing my N95 mask inside
Now you too can watch the AQI inside and outside my house: https://aaronparecki.com/air/
Fun Friday night project: set up a PM2.5 sensor inside and hooked it up to my home automation hub, and now have a display on the wall showing the terrible terrible inside and outside AQI
No contact drop off
Couldn't take it anymore and didn't want to film a whole several-hour course with terrible quarantine hair 💇♂️
I'm going to Mars! So long suckers! 🚀 https://mars.nasa.gov/participate/send-your-name/future/certificate/702345554983
