I think developers focus so much of their energy on new dev tools because the barrier to shipping useful things in that space is so much lower, and you also generate interest from your peers.

When people stand near a boarding gate, knowing they are in a group that is not yet called, but adjacent to those who are boarding, what does it signify? Do they feel that permission to board the plane will rub off on them? Do they imagine their ticket is contingent on proximity?
