Calling all blog/CMS nerds: many of our systems have an idea of a “day” worth of content: archives, dialy digests, etc. My question is: what defines the current “day”? Is it from my perspective as the author? The reader’s? What about email digests?

    Aaron Parecki
I've decided a "day" is my day, local time. That means if I travel to another timezone, the day might change in weird ways. You can see some of the side effects of this on my day archive pages when I've traveled across the date line. Some days are super long, others have almost no posts.

I used to be pretty anti-starting soon screen, but now I consider:
    - Twitch notifications take 3-5 minutes to send in most cases
    - Many people like to not miss gameplay or initial hellos
    - There is almost always a "let me hit me resub button" rush during the start period

Most viewers aren’t seeing the notification immediately. If I do see a notification right away, it gives me time to wrap up what I’m doing or grab a drink/snack before the stream starts. I’m not waiting 20 min, but I can wait 5 minutes for a couple hours of entertainment.

Most people don't have viewers immediately (I know, I don't) and it helps me send out all social media notifications by hand AFTER I hit the live button, so that I'm not lying about that live bit. 2-5 minutes is not a long time to wait, you know?

I always felt like it was a way for people to get in before the streamer actually starts talking. I've been told before that some viewers like being there for the first words of the stream and a Starting Soon screen gives more people a chance for that!

My twitch notification takes a few minutes to push through. If I start stream the majority of viewers will miss the first few minutes of what I say (when I’m normally catching up with my day / week) and I’ll have to repeat it all loooool

I’ve never understood the Starting Soon screen

Like it’s so disappointing for a viewer to hit a go live notification only to be hit with a 5m wait screen. Plus, being live right away lets me hang out with the viewers that are there before the notification

    Anyone feel the same?

Oh I’m sorted for the non “e” whisky - got a Lagavulin 16 I’m slowly working through. Thank you for the recommendation! Will try Fighting Cock!
    Aaron Parecki
Caveat: I mainly use fighting cock in mixed drinks. It's not that great on its own.

It feels pretty fucked up to have built Trump's magaphone. Twitter serves a lot of other important roles, too, though. I'm glad that they're starting to take steps to rein in the damage, but I wish they'd go further to create safe spaces for all of us.

Recommend me a bourbon? (Not Bulleit.)

I've been drinking Kings County Distillery straight bourbon, which has been lovely to drink over ice or in cocktails. I'd gladly buy it again. But what else do you think is fantastic?

    Cheap but good: Fighting Cock
Good but not too expensive: Macallan 12 Year
