Hooking up a 3-wire extension cord to a 4-wire plug, what could go wrong 😃
My electrician explained how the other end is connected... the white wire is actually the second phase hot wire, and the green wire is tied to both ground and neutral at the pole.

and we're live! Feeding the generator inlet with a 30 amp extension cord that runs to the temp pole at the street!

@aaronpk that connector looks really silly. US plugs are something
To be fair, this is not a "normal" plug in the US. This is rated for 240v 50a, our normal plugs are 120v 15a. This one is meant for hooking up an RV or boat to a generator. What would an equivalent look like in Germany? -

well not quite! This is still temporary power and only for our unit, but at least we can use the lights and even run the fridge now!
