I'm trying to pick out doorknobs and locks for the house and it turns out I have a lot of feelings about how doors should work

I recently learned there are โ€œNorman doorsโ€. Look it up if you havenโ€™t heard of them.

ohh yeah I swear someone did a whole conference talk about the analogies of door UX and software UX

Important questions: do you have animals, and if so how good are they at turning doorknobs and door levers?
    Aaron Parecki
we have a cat and she currently has not figured out how to operate the door levels.

but I'm actually more concerned about exterior doors at the moment. I'll be freaking out about the interior doors in a couple months.

    My personal preferences are

    Nothing electronic.
    Locking deadbolt.
    ANSI/BHMA grade 2 or better.
    Security plate for deadbolt strike.
    Non-locking knob/lever (can't lock yourself out).
    Aaron Parecki
for exterior? that's interesting, I'm almost the complete opposite

Smart lock deadbolts with passage levers for the entry mechanism!
    Aaron Parecki
I actually really don't like smartlock deadbolts, because it takes more power to physically move the deadbolt so the battery life is worse. I want it to be hardwired to mains power. (with battery backup and physical key secondary backup of course)

Yes but have you looked at reinforcement for the door frames, steel is your friend
    Aaron Parecki
I'm actually leaning towards electronic door strikes, since that provides the best UX when the power fails or the whole system is down, it just turns into a regular keyed door lock

I've been using that new macOS/iOS feature where you can use your iPhone as a webcam and it's fantastic - quality is absolutely superb

Makes me wonder why Apple can't ship the iPhone camera built into a MacBook screen. Is the part just prohibitively expensive?
