The TVs are actively gathering data by design and proven security breaches if they have a mic or camera. I’m not a tin foil hat person... I use Zoom, a credit card, and even a Safeway member number. But no way would I connect my TV to the internet. AppleTV is the firewall.
    Aaron Parecki
    💯 hard same.

I bought a "commercial display" because it's almost impossible to find a not-smart TV these days.

Just give me a panel and I'll add the smarts I trust (Apple TV) externally.

The purpose of automation is to allow shorter certs and the reasons for shorter certs are many. Also, automated processes are more reliable than human processes.

One problem — YouTube app on Apple TV 4K doesn’t play 4K or HDR (doesn’t use VP9/VP9.2 codec). This is such a stupid pissing contest between Apple and Google. It’s truly wonderful when multi-billion dollar companies can’t cooperate for the benefit of the customers who made them.
    Aaron Parecki
Is this a VP9 vs HEVC thing? I assume the Apple TV is too low power to implement software decoding and needs hardware support, but that means a new Apple TV to get VP9, if Apple will even add that since they're all in on HEVC? What a mess.

But also this is a perfect example of why an external box is better than a smart TV. Once your TV has hardware decoders, good luck upgrading that when better video codecs are released in a few years. At least with the Apple TV you can replace that part and keep the same panel.

Yeah. It’s not a hardware power thing. My 2017 iPhone X plays VP9 just fine.
    Aaron Parecki
iPhone X is the A11 processor. The Apple TV is A8, Apple TV 4K is the A10, so it'll be a while before a new chip makes it to an updated Apple TV!

So I'm just wondering... With static assets like images, adding an edge CDN is relatively simple. But with anything dynamic like API responses, not so much. There must be ways of dealing with that. Because, let's say my servers are in Germany, and you are in Australia. Any API response for you takes up to 800ms longer than for me.

    #devops

    Aaron Parecki
The solution is not trivial. API servers distributed in multiple data centers, and eventually you'll end up needing databases in multiple regions too. That'll lead you down to the multi-primary database problem.

Ironically this is the thing ActivityPub promised to solve by having people use a large number of smaller servers where the replication of data is the ActivityPub protocol.

@aaronpk I'm not saying this is necessary to do here. There's a number of region-specific Mastodon servers for which this issue will never exist.

    Aaron Parecki
Yeah it is only relevant to the huge global instances, which look much more like a traditional web app than anything decentralized.

    Yeah I still don’t buy it’s a processor thing.
    Aaron Parecki
Ok you're right, at least on the TV 4K, because Plex can play VP9 videos on it. They must have bundled a software decoder into Plex to do that without hardware acceleration.

My 2017 12" MacBook is starting to show its age, but I hate that there is nothing to replace it right now. There's no reason to get a MacBook Air since it's the same form factor as the 13" Pro. But it seems unlikely they're going to release a small computer again at this point.

They will. ARM based Mac laptops will come in 12 and 14 inch models I’m sure.
    Aaron Parecki
Even if those come out later this year, I feel like it'll be at least a couple more years before the software support for things works well on ARM.

You might also consider going Linux. Most of the engineers I work with have done that
    Aaron Parecki
oof. I guess since I've already moved my Photoshop and video editing workflow to a Windows laptop, all I really need out of this smaller one is a good web dev environment, so maybe? I'll miss iMessage and Fantastical though.

I'm bemused by the thought that a 3yo computer is "starting to show its age." I have a 2009 Mac Pro, which I only began to consider dated when Apple replaced OpenGL with Metal, which my system doesn't support.
    Aaron Parecki
It's probably because it was not a high-end machine when I got it, plus getting it into this form factor means cutting a lot of corners on the architecture internally. When you have infinite space and no power limits you can definitely build a machine that'll last 7-10 years.

Trying Surface Go for this reason. Installed Ubuntu. It works, but not great. Windows 10 is good enough, if you can set your dev env there.

Interesting. I do have a Windows laptop that I use for photo and video editing already, I really don't think I can move my dev environment there though.

I think network crews are purposefully downgrading the “at home experience” because they are afraid we might get used it and like it more. I know how easy it would be to double the quality.

I vastly prefer the home coverage over the overproduced shiny versions we used to see.

Their regular laptops are getting so thin and light, they probably don’t see a large market size for an ultra book now.

But my favorite computer ever was my 11” Air.

Sometimes I use my iPad mini and keyboard for similar effect.
    Aaron Parecki
The 11" Air was also my favorite! Tho this 12" is actually smaller form factor but has a larger screen so it's nice. I just wish it was a liiiitle faster, even if it had to be a little thicker.

@aaronpk It would seem they’d have to update the 13” MacBook Pro to match its updated 16” counterpart sometime soon?

I'm secretly hoping they put out a matching update to the 16" but in a 12" form factor. I would be all over that in a second.

@aaronpk I also wonder if the 13” would get bumped up to 14” rather than shrunk down to 12”, to match the 15” that got bumped up to 16”. 🤷‍♂️

    Aaron Parecki
Yeah I'm not optimistic there will ever be a smaller than 13" MacBook again, since they are bumping up the specs of iPads so much

Same! It's totally fine for me!
