Apple is clearly up to more than they revealed with HomeKit in iOS 8 today. An iPhone can't control your home lights if you're away from home without some sort of connection.

If Apple adds HomeKit support to iCloud, then your phone would have a backend to talk to.

The next step would be getting some device to sit in your house to send the raw messages to all the devices. Maybe this will be built into the next Airports, or could be launched as a separate device. This device would be able to use the iCloud connection.

When you're away from home you could tell your phone to turn off the lights, it would send a message via iCloud which would be picked up by the base station at home.

In its current iteration HomeKit just looks like an alternate front-end app for controlling existing home automation devices. These devices already have their own methods for controlling away from home (e.g. Hue uses a hub that plugs into the network via Ethernet and communicates through Philips' servers, WeMo has independent Wi-Fi devices that call out to Belkin's servers). Apple doesn't need to run servers if the developers are already doing all the work.

The thing that tipped me off to this is their mentioning of a "persistent cross-device database"

wouldn't existing zeroconf work for this, like it does with Back To My Mac? DNS-SD and NAT routing needed.

From the stories I've heard, it sounds like they're almost caught up to the famous networked Parecki house
