  • Owning My Data in 2014

The core principle of the IndieWeb is to own your data by creating content on your own domain with permalinks you control, rather than creating content in silos.

  • Barry Frost https://barryfrost.com/

And so it’s time to launch a new version of my personal website, https://barryfrost.com. Over the last few weeks I’ve been building this new platform from scratch with a few new key aims:

    1. Hosting all of my 10+ years of Pinboard/Delicious bookmarks, Twitter tweets and blog articles
    2. Sending replies, reposts and likes to IndieWeb sites and silos like Instagram
    3. Store all my content in files rather than in a database but cache/index using SQL/NoSQL
    4. Exposing a Micropub endpoint for creating new content
    5. Displaying reply/repost/like contexts above posts
    6. Bringing my software up-to-date with IndieWeb technologies
    7. Learning how to set up my server/VPS from scratch, rather than relying on Heroku

My last system #Baker offered a partial implementation of webmentions and syndications but was buggy and broken in places. My Microformats markup was also flaky. Hopefully this new attempt is a little more robust. Fuller details are in the colophon.

So kick the tyres, send this post a webmention from your site or respond on Twitter.

The Github activity page is an interesting example of a feed where the entries have both an author photo as well as an icon indicating the type of entry.

Currently my entries have a place for a single image which is either the author photo or an icon representing the post type. Maybe this is something I should think about redesigning.

@aaronpk Welcome to the club! http://justagwailo.com/shared Will they have an RSS feed? And will you tweet them as well, like I do at @justagwailo?
    Aaron Parecki
@sillygwailo @justagwailo Awesome! Mine will be h-entrys so you can follow the list with an h-feed reader (or via an RSS proxy) More info: https://indiewebcamp.com/h-feed I might tweet them out from @pkbot, but that's not a high priority. What would be better is if I favorite a URL that is syndicated to twitter, then it also would syndicate my favorite to twitter: https://indiewebcamp.com/Twitter#POSSE_Favorites_of_Tweets

  • Enabling Webmentions (www.kryogenix.org)
So, 12 years ago, I invented Pingback. Sorry. Pingback uses XMLRPC because that was the cool thing at the time and because I was young and foolish and had a peanut for a brain. Ian Hickson took my vague spec and kicked it in the arse to make it a proper spec, and it got adopted really quickly. Back then, when the world was young, everything got adopted really quickly; there was so much new ground to be broken that coming up with a reasonable way to do something (permalinks, RSS autodiscovery, pingbacks) meant that it got picked up by everybody.

    Aaron Parecki
@almereyda There are a number of ways of getting a copy of the #indieweb wiki: https://indiewebcamp.com/wiki/backup via rsync or Bittorrent Sync

@aaronpk If, instead of running your own blog, you structured it as a WikiLog using SmashedTogetherWords, you'd encourage a cross-user graph
    Aaron Parecki
@BillSeitz I think I get what you're talking about. Sounds like that kind of thing can be done with Webmentions and pages on your own site. Nothing about #indieweb or webmention says it has to be a blog or time-ordered posts. Also see some research/documentation on how people are using wikis on their own domains: http://indiewebcamp.com/wiki-page

Hi, I'm Aaron Parecki, Director of Identity Standards at Okta, and co-founder of IndieWebCamp. I maintain oauth.net, write and consult about OAuth, and participate in the OAuth Working Group at the IETF. I also help people learn about video production and livestreaming. (detailed bio)

I've been tracking my location since 2008 and I wrote 100 songs in 100 days. I've spoken at conferences around the world about owning your data, OAuth, quantified self, and explained why R is a vowel. Read more.
