From trusted source: Person on FB recovery effort said the outage was from a routine BGP update gone wrong. But the update blocked remote users from reverting changes, and people with physical access didn't have network/logical access. So blocked at both ends from reversing it.

People making jokes about the Facebook services going down make me sick. Anyone who was using an Oculus headset at the time is currently trapped in VR, and if they die there then they die in real life.

set up your own mailing list, get people's ph number for texting, share everything on your own URL that you own and control and just use the platforms as way to share/link back to your own "platform"

At 15:40 BGP started learning at a geometric rate, at 15:52 UTC it became sentient. At 15:54, thinking that Asimov's 3 laws of robotics sounded like a decent idea, BGPnet shut dowm Facebook.

You know what's not down? My #homepage, my #email , and my #xmpp messaging through my own server.

So instead of waiting for #facebookdown #instagramdisabled #whatsappdown and #gmaildown to come back let's rebuild the Old Internet!

I’m not gonna lecture anybody. I’m just going to say the social media outages are a great - if accidental - opportunity to think about where else you might set up your platform and/or to consider other options like a newsletter or website you control outright.

Every time there’s been a hot new platform - Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram - this happens.

"Dogfooding", but you're a dog, and the food is made of other dogs.

"facebook is down" is one thing but "facebook is down and they can't fix it because they locked themselves out of the house and they can't talk to each other because facebook is down" is funnier than any joke you could write

Status meeting:
"We need to cut back on advertising"

Later that Monday:
"Goddammit, we didn't mean you BGP team"

It's fine for most people who are just trying to share some photos with friends if a social network is down for a day (or a week!). But if you're serious about running a business or a mission, a cause or campaign, you don't build on rented land.

Facebook being down has had a dramatic negative impact on my productivity, because there is comedy gold here on Twitter and in private chats that I just don't want to miss out on.

Today is a good day to remind you of a website first strategy for your content. If your business is only on a FB or IG site, today is probably a bad day for you. #indieweb #onlineautonomy
