yes, they are still a thing. If they are being used or not … I find that to be a case-by-case basis. Docs haven’t been updated in YEARS!
@anotheruiguy which docs were you looking at? There's been lots of updates in the last few years, e.g. https://microformats.io -
The break away internet: https://indieweb.org/ all mainstream ideas were once at the fringe, perhaps these radicals are the future?
