@aaronpk Some sort of metallic object at a consistent height that you’ll remember for locating studs. It could be something as simple as a nail at doorknob height on all of them. Extra points if you can figure out some sort of way to note where your wires and pipes are, like maybe a magnet flipped so that it repels when you use a stud finding magnet. If I could make any upgrade to the walls of my house, that would be it by a mile.

    Aaron Parecki
Interesting, I've always used a stud finder for finding the wood which works pretty well. I'm definitely worried about finding the pipes later, but I'm going to spend a full day photographing and cataloguing each wall before they get closed up.

@aaronpk if you're going to have a wired security system, having the security company installer come and do that before the walls closed up would be good.

    Aaron Parecki
I don't really know what goes into a security system these days, I'm doing a lot of it DIY. I have outdoor cameras already, and electronic locks for the doors. Also wires for door contact sensors.

@aaronpk yes - we added them when we renovated the bathroom and it's great. Also a power outlet by the toilet for a heated toilet seat, and another inside of the bathroom cabinet for charging razors (so they don't have to be out on the countertop all of the time).

    Aaron Parecki
Nice! and yup got outlets in those spots already!

@aaronpk also: speaker wire for wherever you will want speakers. We put ceiling mounted speakers above the sink in our master bathroom and they get used daily.

    Aaron Parecki
ooh bathroom is not something I had considered. We do have speakers in the living room, kitchen, and rooftop patio tho!

@aaronpk if your internets will be delivered by your cable tv provider, make sure you have a path for that cable... otherwise the cable company will just butcher your house when they do their install

    Aaron Parecki
I hope to never have internet delivered from the cable provider 😅 and have no plans to get cable service, BUT... the electrician insisted on running coax everywhere anyway, so now my plan is to create my own in-house cable TV network

@aaronpk we did a remodel years ago and the general contractor suggested I take photos like this. It allowed us to uncover an HVAC duct that was completely sheet rocked over!

    Aaron Parecki
whoops! Yeah you can be sure I am going to photograph the crap out of every wall in the new house! The contractor normally does it himself but he was like "I know you'll do a better job of documenting this than I will" 😅

Sadly my hopes of getting a mailbox opened notification seem to be a lost cause. The 433mhz sensor doesn't have enough power to reach the 80 feet to the street. The Zigbee one does reach that distance, but not once it's inside the mailbox.

I just found a LoRa line of home automation products, and while I'm not a fan that their Home Assistant integration is all through the cloud API, I might have to give it a shot for this anyway.
    Aaron Parecki
Update: The LoRa sensor has no trouble at all with the range, but it's still touchy when the transmitter is inside the mailbox.

If it's in exactly the right spot it works, but not when the transmitter is where I actually want to mount it on the side.

The one I found has the transmitter box with a breakout cable to the contact sensors, so I was able to run the wire for the contact sensors to the door flap and stick the transmitter on the underside outside of the box. Now it works great!

@aaronpk anything in between with mains power where you could put a Zigbee repeater, like a switched outlet adapter or similar?

    Aaron Parecki
Right now the closest distance to any power is 80ft. I did just stick a repeater on the outside wall up high with more or less direct line of sight, but I think it takes a while for the network to sync up so I will have to check on it again tomorrow to see if it's found it.

@aaronpk So I can see now why the home automation topic was burning a hole in your proverbial content pocket. Lots going on there, right now,... on the home front.

    Aaron Parecki
This is just one of many home automation projects in the works!

@aaronpk Is it an electric bike? Do you do live switching? If so, with what?

    Aaron Parecki
It wasn't when I got it, but I swapped the front wheel with a Swytch kit and it's been amazing!
