I’m not sure if this is by design, but your photos don’t seem to come through in your RSS feed. Just a heads up.

    Aaron Parecki
I don't know if I would call it "by design", but my RSS (actually Atom) feed is really meant for just my blog posts. You'll get a better result following my other posts from the higher fidelity Microformats or JSONFeed

I do feel like a dirty YouTuber jumping on the ‘trend’ with Mr McKinnon but daaaamn. The video is doing well ha.

I won’t make a habit of it. It doesn’t really offer much value to anyone, but sometimes it’s nice to get an ‘easy’ win.
    Aaron Parecki
    Take the win!

But also, does he really edit his own videos still? I would have assumed he had hired that out long ago by now.

It's odd what the web has decided are worthy to be native, usable, out of the box controls and what aren't. Like buttons, images, checkboxes, dropdowns... people should have those. But progress bars, tabs, segmented controls, real lists/grids, loading spinners... nobody needs those. They're even taking more native controls away, like the input/alert modals. I know I look at web development through a native developer lens, and wish the web was as good as native development, but it's still interesting to think about.

Oof. Sounds like a terrible game.
So maybe not even related to NBC? Just people trying to get SEO juice by linking to them? I don't get the rules of this gross house of cards.
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah, I think the idea is to clone articles on popular topics from major new sites, and send them all pingbacks to get the back-links to boost the ranking of the spam site. SEO can DIAF.

well that was unexpected! I have a "secret" hashtag in the post, so the post shows up on the #indieweb hashtag page even though I didn't mention #indieweb in the post at all!

    Good lord.

I did one quick chat for an NBC news piece and they linked to my website.

Now my WebMentions are a dumpster fire - filled with all their crappy, low-quality syndicated copies of the article.

    Aaron Parecki
also fwiw, that kind of spam usually comes in via pingback, so you can just not include the pingback tag to webmention.io and accept only webmentions instead

What's very weird about those two examples, is both websites are now something totally different and those blog posts are gone. I think it's part of an SEO scam game of some sort.

@aaronpk I'm anti-trackpad under any circumstance (maybe BECAUSE I'm only ever really trying Windows laptops? Maybe if I was a Macbooker I'd be more cool with trackpads? Probably not I think). So I'm totally happy to grant you that but I'll always pull out the MX Master anyway. :)

    Aaron Parecki
It's true, I do feel far less frustrated using a mouse with my windows computer. But weirdly I feel more frustrated using a mouse with my Mac, but the trackpad on the mac laptop is great. Also I don't really like the external Mac trackpad? Computers are weird

What laptop do you have? I am on a Surface Pro 8 and the responsiveness is fully comparable to the MBP pro… well, the win10 one, at least. I have another SP8 w win11 and that one is indeed a bit laggy 😅

It's the Razer Stealth 13, I bought it in 2019 so it's not exactly new, but it was new and best of class at the time! I did just update it to Windows 11 because it basically forced me to.

@aaronpk I have very much the same experience when I use Mac, so I really do think it's just about what you're used to. I'm thinking about buying a Mac and spending time on it just to build up familiarity.

    Aaron Parecki
it's funny because I grew up on windows computers, but stopped using them around the XP era. I agree that most of the differences are learned, but I swear Macbook trackpads are the absolute best no question, and no PC laptops come anywhere close.

After hacking on Windows native MSVC builds for about a month in an emulator, it stopped feeling so weird. But it was a struggle for weeks. Muscle memory is extremely hard to overcome. "Mind over matter" — I think not.
    Aaron Parecki
oh gosh, I feel like I'm using an emulator every time I interact with this physical windows laptop. It just doesn't respond as fast, the trackpad is wildly less accurate, it feels like I'm one step removed from the interactions with the computer

How do I find the value of this? This used to be a gas furnace, but the guts are ripped out, so it’s just decorative unless someone restored it. New, these things cost well over $2,000. It’s cast iron and weighs a ton. I can’t figure out if it’s worth $10 or $1,000!
