@aaronpk 4 hours is incredible. If I do two, or sometimes even just one one-hour Zoom presentation in a day, I’m wiped.

    Aaron Parecki
I've had a lot of practice the last 2 years.

It surprises me every time though.

eh it's an open protocol, ideally there is no "official" client at all. Anyone can make an Android client. They're just prototyping it on iOS for now.

@aaronpk How should #mastodon and other #fediverse apps support #oauth? Can we have a better experience than "enter your server URL here to follow"?

    Aaron Parecki
Same advice really, but the "enter your server URL to follow" is a slightly different (and more complicated) problem.

    No.
To be clear: Not run an ad on a video, run your video as an ad, basically putting paid reach behind it the same way the creator can.
You'll sometimes see companies do this if a creator made a video about their product (sponsored or unsponsored) and they liked it.
    Aaron Parecki
This happened to me once, the PR agency I worked with ran my video as an ad without telling me. I'm also suspicious that they might not have told their client, and used it as a way to boost the views on my video to make them look good?

Context switches are absolutely brutal in identity. The amount of context I need to swap in and out from my brain for different subtopics is staggering.

Quick reminder: When you get an email like this, what they are offering isn't an actual sponsorship. What they are really doing is giving you a $100 sign on bonus to promote the company as an affiliate in your videos. Ah, the illegal fake review scheme that can cause them to lose their store. It would be a shame if they got reported...

lol yeah, the best part is the postcard says "for your safety, don't include this postcard in your photo in your review"

@aaronpk If it's a gift card that can be used to purchase a product from anyone (not just from the seller asking for the review), then that's different. However, they may have made a $200-300 profit on the $500 sale. Reinvesting part of the profit into reviews for a new-ish listing can create a competitive advantage that can pay off well over the longer term. Even if they break even or have a small loss, it can be an effective "loss leader" strategy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_leader

    Aaron Parecki
Amazon gift cards are basically cash. And yes I'm familiar with the concept of a loss leader

@aaronpk It sounds like a lot to “pay” (it doesn’t cost them $150) for a review, but the ROI depends on the price of the item being sold. Good reviews are a necessity for a successful listing on Amazon and they will affect sales performance for years. However, the technique is risky for them because it violates Amazon’s ToS and could cause them to lose the ability to sell on that platform.

    Aaron Parecki
How does it not cost them $150 to send me a $150 gift card? This is different than the ones that offer to just refund a purchase or send something for free, since that costs them only the cost of the product, not actual cash.

fwiw this was for a $500 purchase

That’s awesome. I actually use Quill daily for posting and testing. I ended up finding omnibear which does most of what I want. It even detects if a site supports webmentions and displays a “W” during the reply. Omnibear definitely leaves a bit to be desired, but does the job. Is your Quill bookmarklet public?

    Aaron Parecki
Nice! hmm, I thought the bookmarklet was in Quill itself, but now that I'm looking for it it's only there for bookmarks and favorites. Well the secret is to make a bookmarklet to `https://quill.p3k.io/new?reply=https://example.com`, the JS should be similar to how the bookmark bookmarklet works though.

$195 for the base model will do it! That's certainly a lot less than the computer cost!

@aaronpk I am a proud owner of a beach tent which was sent to us unsolicited and unannounced in order to get a good review I believe.

    Aaron Parecki
    well that's a thing.

It is slightly different tho because them sending you a $150 object doesn't actually cost them $150. This is an offer of straight up cash.

or you can add the graphics on an external device like an ATEM Mini! No extra CPU load, your computer sees it as just a webcam.

@rabble @aaronpk i'm more curious about how you set up cross-posting tbh; the "Applications model" page in their docs has a reasonable example to create a post but i wish there was more detail about each method. i post a lot of pics and it seems like there's support for blob uploads but i can't find documentation on how to hook everything together

    Aaron Parecki
Yeah the docs are rough around the edges still. One tip I got was to look at the tests for examples! https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/tree/main/packages/pds/tests

I just did text posts for now, next step will be image uploads.

@aaronpk where is the docs on the custom domains. I couldn’t find it in the app. Just folks talking about doing it.

    Aaron Parecki
There's no docs yet, but some people figured out the right API calls to run on their account outside the app. It wasn't too hard, but they're going to add a UI to the app for it soon so there's no point in writing up the workaround instructions anyway

Idea: Micropub Browser Extension For Replies

    Aaron Parecki
It's a great idea! I did a lightweight version of that which is a bookmarklet in my browser toolbar to Quill, where it prefills the reply URL to the page I'm on. It's how i reply to most tweets now actually! (https://quill.p3k.io)

@aaronpk gotosocial is that easy too.

    Aaron Parecki
It looks nice! But I'm talking about as easy as adding a DNS record without having to run my own instance at all. Are there many hosting providers for GoToSocial?
