Important note: you should NEVER do this to trailing slashes that exist in the path itself!

https://simonwillison.net/tags and https://simonwillison.net/tags/ are not technically the same URL

But... https://simonwillison.net/ and https://simonwillison.net ARE the same

And if you've decided not to display the https:// protocol, I think it looks prettier if you don't show the trailing slash either

(This is possibly the least important aesthetic preference anyone has ever expressed)

    Aaron Parecki
Thank you for pointing this out! This is always one of the first things I do when displaying URLs. It's the little things that matter!

    @erincandescent @trwnh @mralanorth @shengokai ☝️☝️☝️

The model where everyone gets a new identity for every community they join (1) largely defeats the purpose of federation (2) does not scale as people have *many* communities of interest and (3) doesn't map to our natural conception of identity.

I *hope* it's fixable. May take some convincing of Eugen, which seems hard from this vantage point.

    Aaron Parecki
Thank you! I've been saying this forever.

I also agree that the instance timeline is a useful way for a community to come together, but I think that can be accomplished differently while everyone can still have their primary identity in one place.

And of course, someone should also be able to have multiple separate identities if they want to!

I can never see the word aluminum without thinking of one of my favorite Weird Al numbers, Foil.

I do this one at karaoke pretty regularly. Yes, I could do Royals by Lorde, but the parody is more fun to sing. 🥪🦎

@aaronpk the #raspberrypi does not actually have the horsepower to “Create multiple resolutions of your video and push different resolutions to different platforms”, right? It has trouble encodingone stream at 720p.

    Aaron Parecki
True, using a larger server would be better for that. I'll make a note.

@aaronpk @metawops https://github.com/datarhei/restreamer This is what we are using. It’s based on the same nginx modules but everything works via the web interface after docker compose up. Just love it as it helps saving money for multistreaming.

    Aaron Parecki
Nice, looks good! I personally don't like running things with Docker but if you're already used to that it sounds great

OH. I just found out Emerald Status means I get to use the first class check in at Heathrow with your own security line 😱

I’ve been standing in security lines for no reason all year 😅
    Aaron Parecki
Are you serious, I was just there on Friday and waited in the normal line I had no idea 🤯

Yep! I simply don't see how someone with millions followers practically would *work* with this protocol
    Aaron Parecki
Ironically the problem is already solved if the protocol worked the other direction, aka the web. We know how to scale websites to be able to be accessed by millions of people at a time.

Reading about the tech stack undergirding most Mastodon/fediverse instances, and I am sadly not optimistic that there is a practical path to scale this past a small fraction of twitter's size in the medium term
    Aaron Parecki
It's actually worse than that, the protocol itself needs some serious work to scale it up too.

I'm seeing that a lot as well on my instance. It makes sense in a way. Our instances *could* have done a look up for actors and/or posts and stored that information, for whatever reason.

What bothers me more, is that there are federated platforms out there (Fediverse.blog for instance) that just send out any post to my instance, while I'm not following anyone from that platform at all.
    Aaron Parecki
That's odd, and are those not even in reply to posts from people who you are following?

@aaronpk To ensure the posts are deleted, mastodon sends the Delete activities to all known servers regardless of follower relationships!

    Aaron Parecki
I don't see why it makes any sense to notify my instance about things that my instance has never been notified about before. That goes for both posts as well as accounts.

@aaronpk Combined deletes, delete+redraft and scheduled deleting of old toots.

    Aaron Parecki
It's more than that, most of them are account deletion messages from accounts that I've never seen before

@aaronpk maybe people fixing up their toots multiple times?

    Aaron Parecki
Nope, the vast majority are account delete messages. There's one instance in particular that sends repeated account delete messages, but overall it's mostly deletes from accounts I've never heard of.
