@aaronpk and your Fitbit didn’t need changing time zones back

    Aaron Parecki
Oh yeah good point, the Fitbit changed back automatically this time!

OH. I just found out Emerald Status means I get to use the first class check in at Heathrow with your own security line 😱

I’ve been standing in security lines for no reason all year 😅
    Aaron Parecki
Are you serious, I was just there on Friday and waited in the normal line I had no idea 🤯

Yep! I simply don't see how someone with millions followers practically would *work* with this protocol
    Aaron Parecki
Ironically the problem is already solved if the protocol worked the other direction, aka the web. We know how to scale websites to be able to be accessed by millions of people at a time.

@aaronpk yeah, it's because legit advertisers are fleeing Twitter.

Reading about the tech stack undergirding most Mastodon/fediverse instances, and I am sadly not optimistic that there is a practical path to scale this past a small fraction of twitter's size in the medium term
    Aaron Parecki
It's actually worse than that, the protocol itself needs some serious work to scale it up too.

I'm seeing that a lot as well on my instance. It makes sense in a way. Our instances *could* have done a look up for actors and/or posts and stored that information, for whatever reason.

What bothers me more, is that there are federated platforms out there (Fediverse.blog for instance) that just send out any post to my instance, while I'm not following anyone from that platform at all.
    Aaron Parecki
That's odd, and are those not even in reply to posts from people who you are following?

@aaronpk To ensure the posts are deleted, mastodon sends the Delete activities to all known servers regardless of follower relationships!

    Aaron Parecki
I don't see why it makes any sense to notify my instance about things that my instance has never been notified about before. That goes for both posts as well as accounts.

@aaronpk Combined deletes, delete+redraft and scheduled deleting of old toots.

    Aaron Parecki
It's more than that, most of them are account deletion messages from accounts that I've never seen before

@aaronpk maybe people fixing up their toots multiple times?

    Aaron Parecki
Nope, the vast majority are account delete messages. There's one instance in particular that sends repeated account delete messages, but overall it's mostly deletes from accounts I've never heard of.

@aaronpk I’m killing my Twitter on Sunday so I’ll have to rely on you for trash fire updates

    Aaron Parecki
ok but hear me out, don't actually delete your account, just tombstone it so that nobody can steal your username. I did that with my facebook a few years ago.

@aaronpk I don't know for sure but I do know that some people auto-delete toots after N days so maybe that software is going wild.

    Aaron Parecki
from what I can tell, there's one instance that's going haywire sending me hundreds of delete messages per month for the same set of accounts. Other than that, I've been getting account delete messages for accounts I've never seen before. Seems not ideal.

This is so surreal…Twitter appears completely the same to me as it’s always been. It’s just that the “main character” this week is Twitter itself. But like, everything works the same?
    Aaron Parecki
For now... the number of people who were laid off and also quit, and the stuff coming out from inside, it's not a good indicator

@theadhocracy because the site you referenced is aggregating links - what happens when the author changes the title, for example? Could this be solved with webmentions as well?

    Aaron Parecki
That's exactly how it works! If you update your post on your site, you can re-send the webmention to news.indieweb.org and it will pull in the new content. I built that site ages ago to demonstrate this exact idea of aggregating posts from individuals' websites.

@aaronpk to be honest I just pasted your domain name into Feedly a while ago. It seemed to have picked up the json feed and labels it as RSS. I'm using NetNewsWire as a client on desktop and on the phone.

So it might be Feedly that's making a mess.

    Aaron Parecki
Weird, because the JSONFeed also has the photo in it. I dunno! You can find all my feeds here tho: https://aaronparecki.com/aaronpk

@aaronpk I'm not sure if you're aware: your RSS feed doesn't show the picture

    Aaron Parecki
It's an Atom feed, not RSS, but I see the photo there. What are you using that didn't find the photo?
