great, so some bored hacker with a deauth board can set displays to show all flights cancelled or whatever
    Aaron Parecki
I would sure hope those are hardwired in via ethernet, but there's no guarantees I guess

huh, I wouldn't have figured those kinds of displays would be 4k, 120hz, HDR capable, etc., but maybe economies of scale make that make sense.
    Aaron Parecki
I take it back. I searched around and nearly all the commercial displays I'm finding now also have a computer inside usually with some sort of digital signage platform preinstalled πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

I'm hanging on to my 2015 ViewSonic not-smart commercial display as long as I can

yeah I dunno if the market for 65"+ monitors realistically exists
    Aaron Parecki
It does! "Commercial displays" used in airports and things. Sadly some of those are getting smarts now too, but sometimes that's limited to a serial port

@aaronpk Nice one. Keen to do the same with my blog but haven't looked up how to start integrating with ActivityPub yet.

Wondering if you get notified from Mastodon replies. πŸ‘‹

    Aaron Parecki
Yep! They show up in my reader like any other reply! It takes a bit of work to implement it from scratch, but there's also https://fed.brid.gy which can handle the annoying parts for you

    Channel tabs are here!

Very happy to see this change roll out, especially for live and shorts content. Feels like it's a step to making a dedicated landing page for live streamers.

Who else has it on their channel?
    Aaron Parecki
It's so nice for my channel! I had previously created "Videos" and "Livestreams" playlists and made them the top two sections on my home page to help people find the content they're looking for

Is Lightroom the ONLY good mobile photo editor? There’s all the prequels and etc that have TONS of users and advertisements out the wazoo and yet they all seem mostly useless for anything but selfies.
    Aaron Parecki
I just downgraded my Adobe subscription to the Lightroom only plan because it's so good I can't give it up

@aaronpk I fell down that rabbit hole no fewer than four times and always came back with no new hardware. So much cloud. So little beauty.

    Aaron Parecki
Yup. I think the answer is to look at the commercial market, things you install in office buildings

I'm trying to pick out doorknobs and locks for the house and it turns out I have a lot of feelings about how doors should work
    Aaron Parecki
Features I want in door hardware:

    • always unlocked from the inside
    • always locked from the outside
    • single keyhole on the outside
    • momentary unlock with a key
    • 12V DC momentarily unlock
    • operates as normal when electronics are down

I'll wire it to the smarthome separately

Not right now, but there's an API and it wouldn't take much to write a script to do that
    Aaron Parecki
For some background, I imported all my logs from 2008 to present into it a while ago. Previously they were in a variety of different formats depending on the server I was using at the time.

Looks cool! I'll have to check it out. Does it import the 10+ years of Google Timeline KML and/or GPX I have?

That took us a long time too! We went with Schlage Connect in aged bronze. Works with HomeKit.
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah and I'm not even talking about the smart lock part yet! There's just lots of types of door hardware and different options for quick opening and deadbolts!

Yes but have you looked at reinforcement for the door frames, steel is your friend
    Aaron Parecki
I'm actually leaning towards electronic door strikes, since that provides the best UX when the power fails or the whole system is down, it just turns into a regular keyed door lock

Smart lock deadbolts with passage levers for the entry mechanism!
    Aaron Parecki
I actually really don't like smartlock deadbolts, because it takes more power to physically move the deadbolt so the battery life is worse. I want it to be hardwired to mains power. (with battery backup and physical key secondary backup of course)

    My personal preferences are

    Nothing electronic.
    Locking deadbolt.
    ANSI/BHMA grade 2 or better.
    Security plate for deadbolt strike.
    Non-locking knob/lever (can't lock yourself out).
    Aaron Parecki
for exterior? that's interesting, I'm almost the complete opposite
