I'm trying to pick out doorknobs and locks for the house and it turns out I have a lot of feelings about how doors should work
    Aaron Parecki
Features I want in door hardware:

    • always unlocked from the inside
    • always locked from the outside
    • single keyhole on the outside
    • momentary unlock with a key
    • 12V DC momentarily unlock
    • operates as normal when electronics are down

I'll wire it to the smarthome separately

There are tons of commercial locksets designed to integrate with access control systems that do this exact thing. You want one that is "energize to unlock" (fail safe, not fail open). If you need the model number of the one we are using, let me know.

@aaronpk The Yale Assure keyed series gets most of the way there: https://www.yalehome.com/au/en/products/smart-products/assure-lock-series/yale-assure-digital-lock

It's keyed from the outside. (And a keypad. Not sure if you want to avoid that for security, or style.)

You can enable auto-lock so it re-locks after say 30 seconds.

It's a turnable handle from inside, always unlocked.

It has modular radios, so you can choose Wi-Fi/HomeKit, Z-Wave, or ZigBee. They've also commited a Matter moduel. Pick the local control protocol you trust: https://www.yalehome.com/au/en/products/smart-products/assure-lock-series/network-modules

Did you find any that fit the bill?

I want all those features and "doesn't talk to the cloud" or at least "talking to the cloud isn't necessary at all and can be disabled."

@aaronpk I am with you on this. Locks need a lot of work still in #homeautomation land.

@aaronpk I fell down that rabbit hole no fewer than four times and always came back with no new hardware. So much cloud. So little beauty.
