There’s a 4K, 8 hour video where they mounted a RED camera to the front of a train in Scandinavia somewhere. Put that on a loop in vlc.

there's something delightfully rebellious about taking footage from a RED camera and squishing it down to a monochrome 264x176 0.2fps video

But there's still centralization at some level. TCP? Maybe even HTTP?

Not really...? I can send a TCP packet from my home to my office and only the routers in between need to know about it

Thanks for digging deeper! The "network" centralization is actually pretty much expected though?

I realize that certain applications require a global centralized network state, but many others do not! True decentralization should mean that I can talk to someone else without anyone else knowing that's happening.

I stand corrected, I finally found an explicit reference: https://ethereum.org/en/developers/docs/nodes-and-clients/#clients

"The community maintains multiple open-source clients, developed by different teams using different programming languages."

That's great, so at least it's only centralized on the network state.

Please do your own research before posting messages like this. It's all public. Ethereum has several "node" clients in its 1.x version (geth, parity, erigon...) And an explicit goal of 2.0 was to have actually at least 6.

I did look around and couldn't find any mentions of those on any easily searchable docs. Where is this stuff described? I don't even see any reference to that on the main page about it https://ethereum.org/en/eth2/vision/

What monoculture are you referring to? As someone who's part of that ecosystem, i can guarantee it's a lot more diverse than the orders of magnitude larger than the indieweb one for example...

Are there more than one implementation of the e*t*h protocol? As far as I can tell everyone participating in the network is expected to run the same source code.

This is one of the most important aspects of Web 2.0 that web3 advocates have tried to retcon. That generation also started with optimistic creators talking about decentralized, user-owned, open protocols (open standards, even!) that would empower people. Guess how it played out.

It's almost like the technology isn't the problem ... 🤔🤯

Setting up Chrome as the default browser on Windows 11 is ridiculous. Not only it throws THREE dialogs during the process, I had to manually switch TEN dropdowns 1 by 1. Tasteless bordering unethical, likely insurmountable for non tech savvy users.

@aaronpk the DJI Mini 2 is such an amazing product. The compact size makes it so portable and the video is great. I recently upgraded from a Spark to an Air 2S. Good luck on the test and be sure to share photos on here too! 🚁📷

That's awesome! Yeah I've been super impressed with the Mini 2 already. I took it to Finland (no distinction between commercial and personal use there!) but it was so cold and dark I barely had any chances to fly it!

@aaronpk Quadcopters are so much fun. Are you planning on doing cinematic type stuff or FPV?

I'm just getting started and only plan on flying the DJI Mini 2 for now, mainly for videos/photos. But I realized if I want to show any videos on my YouTube channel it counts as commercial work so I need to get the actual FAA license!

Hopefully so! I wouldn’t personally bet that the devs of every TV app correctly expire these codes within a short time frame 😅 I’ve seen far worse security gaffes, I’m sure you have too.

Fair! Thankfully these codes come from the authorization server rather than the app, so unless you're also building our own AS there's less of a chance of messing that one up! Your comment about the QR code is spot on tho! That's an optimization the app dev can do for better UX

I thought the exact same thing but was too lazy to get my laptop out so I could scan the pictures with my phone to check if they indeed contain the unique code too or just the same generic URL 😂 in case it wasn’t obvious they’re not my screenshots. Hopefully the codes expire.

They do! They also don't (can't) contain any identifying information at this stage in the flow. The only risk in sharing these screenshots is if you share them within like 10 minutes of seeing it, and then the "attacker" can log in their account to your TV so 🤷‍♂️

PSA to all TV app developers: when a user first signs-in please add a QR code that contains the “sign-in through your browser” URL along with the unique code as a query parameter.

It will delight your users who have a phone that supports it (most do now)

Examples 👇

I'm very curious why the code but not the QR is obfuscated in the first one, but the QR and not the code is obfuscated in the second one... they contain the same data! But yes this is a good UX improvement on top of the OAuth device flow 👍
