I knew you'd come through. Thanks man!
    Aaron Parecki
For sure! If autofocus is important then def go with the ZV-1. Oh and another weird thing about the G7 is it can't record and output HDMI at the same time, so it's good as a livestreaming cam but not if you're also going to record on camera.

I need recommendations for SIMPLE cameras to add to my live-streams.

    - I'm adding 2 more cameras. Yes!
    - Gotta have an HDMI connection for the Atem that I'm upgrading to (ATEM Mini Extreme).
    - should work well in LOW-LIGHT environment.
(if you've seen my show, then you know).
    Aaron Parecki
Can't go wrong with the Sony ZV-1, but you'll want to get the USB DC coupler to power it consistently. Slightly cheaper is the LUMIX G7, I have a bunch of those around the studio.

This probably also means safari/apple are scraping/indexing text in images
    Aaron Parecki
Absolutely, it's pretty cool to be able to search my phone for something and it's also searching the text in my photos!

@aaronpk yep one of the best new features in iOS15. And it is so handy. Also works in the camera app.

    Aaron Parecki
I've been taking full advantage of it in the camera app and photo app, but I had no idea the browser does it too! So cool!

@aaronpk such a great graphic to help people understand Fill & Key from Blackmagic’s HyperDeck page. Thought you would like to have it on file.

I've considered getting one more than once!
    Aaron Parecki
I have thought about this more than once as well, but then I realize I barely know what to do with the NFC sticker on the back of my phone case and the one I carry in my wallet. Suggestions?

    YouTubers…
What are you doing to help with audio when you have to film with hardwood floors? I put an area carpet in my new office but this house just has different acoustics…

Anything I need to know? Thanks!
    Aaron Parecki
Definitely a rug, and then lots of stuff everywhere to break up the flat surfaces of the walls. If you want to, put fancy sound panels on the walls and ceilings, but if you can't, just filling the walls with shelves and decorations will help.

@aaronpk If you taking requests, I would love to be able to add my own modes of transport, eg e-bikes and someone else’s car.

    Aaron Parecki
I think creating custom modes is a bit beyond my limited iOS dev skills, but I can definitely add a few more hard coded ones! I've been wanting e-bike and scooter as well!

I got some great comments and questions about my video setup from my colleagues at @snyksec. Everything I do (and have) I learned from @aaronpk. I sent around a bunch of links to your http://kit.co/aaronpk kits today!

@aaronpk Not literally that fast, but Swift has moved really fast over the years. Swift written not long ago probably won't build anymore where Objective-c I wrote 10 years ago still builds! (Though Apple framework changes will still break code in any language over time)

    Aaron Parecki
in any case it sounds like there's a bunch of bugs in the latest XCode version, so I'm going to hold off on doing anything until they release an update. But then I will report back on how it goes!

Does Apple even let you publish something like that on their store? I saw that GPSLogger gave up on the Google Play store. I appreciate the privacy concerns with trackers but it'd be nice to have an exception for these "this data is for you" as opposed to adware.
    Aaron Parecki
There's a ton of apps like this, I don't think it's a problem. Someone ported my iOS app to Android recently even. Also from what I read in (your!) HN thread, the reason it was removed from the Google Play store had nothing to do with privacy? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24735159

You sure thats the case? I have 1tb drive space on my mini and Xcode 13.2 took an hour to DL and actually never finished. Went on forever until I redefined forever to be Stop & End!
    Aaron Parecki
I mean my laptop has 14gb free right now and XCode is 12.6gb. I did just see all the headlines about issues with XCode 13.2 so I guess I'm gonna put off this project until they get that sorted out.

@aaronpk At least it's in Objective-c and not Swift. Swift code goes out of date weekly!

    Aaron Parecki
oh no does it? I think part of it is in Swift when a couple of other people contributed some stuff to it.

It's been over 3 years since I've published an update for Overland, my GPS tracker app, and I am a little terrified to re-download XCode and see how much work it's going to take to even make it compile now 😬 https://overland.p3k.app
    Aaron Parecki
also my poor little M1 MacBook Air doesn't have enough disk space to even download XCode, so I guess I'm gonna do that on an older computer. or buy a bigger macbook

I'm sure things changed after the federal push of boosters for all, but it was like pulling teeth to get a booster the first week of November.
    Aaron Parecki
weird, I got mine in October and I don't even think there was a special box to tick, just had to be 6 months after J&J

@aaronpk Pretty sure moving to the proprietary walled garden GitHub where a project's data has no escape route fails at least 7/11 of the #IndieWeb principles.

    ❌ Own your data
    ❌ Make what you need
    ❌ Use what you make
    ❌ Open source your stuff
    ❌ Modularity
    ❌ Longevity
    ❌ Plurality

    Aaron Parecki
I just agree with gargron that the tooling around a project doesn't need to blindly follow FOSS just for the sake of it. But I do realize I'm sending this to floss.social https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/107419999666450567

@aaronpk Wrong: The Discourse project offers free hosting to maintainers and has for many years: https://free.discourse.group/

Shilling for Microsoft is pretty far afield from the #IndieWeb ....

    Aaron Parecki
I think you'll find most of the IndieWeb community is not the die-hard FOSS fans. Open source is important, but is not an end goal in and of itself. There's plenty of examples of not open source IndieWeb software that happily interoperates with the open source software.

Cool cool, @Gargron moving all @Mastodon project discussion behind a proprietary walled garden that requires agreement with Microsoft terms of service (and their analytics tracking). Now THAT makes a ton of sense. 🤦‍♂️

    #MastoAdmin #Mastodon #OpenSource #FreeSoftware #FLOSS #privacy

    https://discourse.joinmastodon.org/t/we-are-moving-to-github-discussions/4010

    Aaron Parecki
Good. Less infrastructure for the project maintainers to maintain means more time to spend on the actual product. Running a Discourse instance isn't free, both in money and time.

This sounds super interesting! Have you written about it?
    Aaron Parecki
I haven't written anything specific about it because it's mostly a bunch of low-level gibberish around http signing and creating funny JSON blobs, but I did spin out the code into a standalone service I've used for other bots https://github.com/aaronpk/Nautilus
