We're considering moving in the next 2-3 years so obviously that means I need to spend 5 hours a day pouring over Zillow.

This is my life now 😭
    Aaron Parecki
    Didn't you just move??

Cisco knows a thing or two about security and did not require VPNs to access email or company messaging on mobile devices. Presumably those go over TLS anyway.

They did require strong passcodes and a device profile that allowed them to remote wipe lost devices.
    Aaron Parecki
oof I have mixed feelings on the remote wipe bit

Pretty sure M$ can afford to buy work devices for people who need access to corporate resources 🤷‍♂️🤔

    what isn't?
    Aaron Parecki
I don't care whether the VPN is "not a traditional VPN", the company IT dept doesn't get to install anything on my personal devices that they control

Well, IT does explain all this but people either don't like to read or deliberately leave it out when tweeting to sensationalize it and bash IT.
    Aaron Parecki
    still not acceptable IMO

In the world of web security does anyone have a reference for the absolute and clear definition of host and domain? I see variance in some standards.

The *real* address bar is a nuance that gets lost- people usually focus on the affordance in itself (seeing where you are allegedly going) rather than what it might be a symptom of (use of the system browser)
    Aaron Parecki
I agree, and platforms haven't been doing much to help in this regard lately either. One of the last mechanisms we have to clearly communicate this is that websites can't draw things outside the browser window. Obvs that's different in mobile apps tho.

years after the hype died out, 3d printing lives on with niche products on etsy, and i must admit, it's cool. custom lampshades, a lil organizer for my aeropress - they're things that benefit from that ability to do tiny quantities of custom things.
    Aaron Parecki
the hype died out, and now it’s just useful?

This is why I always refused the argument “embedded browsers are bad because they don’t show the address bar”.
Here’s FB’s EMBEDDED browser showing an address bar… and it can show *whatever* the app developer wants in there. Also, capture all your keystrokes.
    Aaron Parecki
That’s the point of the argument though, it’s not about whether there is an address bar visible, it’s whether it’s the *real* system address bar. Unfortunately it’s nearly impossible to enforce or accurately communicate to users tho.

Actually, maybe it is a criticism. The readers take...more effort to listen to, some how? That doesn't make any sense to me but I guess I can see why people like @ycombinator explicitly warn against it when pitching.
    Aaron Parecki
If I’m doing a talk live, I will 100% not read from a script. However, if I’m publishing a prerecorded video, I’ll read from a script and heavily edit it down. I also find that when I am writing a script that I will be reading on camera, I write in a *completely* different style.

@aaronpk have I done something wrong here? Holes for the nameplate don't line up with the monitor stand for the diy extreme print. Not a big deal as I'll probably do my own thing here anyway, just checking.
    Aaron Parecki
oh gosh thanks for the reminder, I uploaded the wrong faceplate design! I'm going to push out an update through Gumroad shortly.

I WILL not be cleaning off my desk. I use the thing. Deal with it 😂
