Yeah there are a couple tricks, none of which are ideal. Basically you kick off the flow from the CLI app, get the user to visit a URL, but the redirect is to your server, and then you either tell them to paste an auth code into the CLI or

or, you spin up a local web server to catch a redirect back from your backend, or you mimic the OAuth device flow on your backend. Hmm this sounds like a fun blog post 😬

@aaronpk do you know if there's a neat way for me to auth with Foursquare from a CLI tool I'm building? I need the user to be able to get their own OAuth token but I don't want to ship my client secret with the CLI tool

BTW, the reason I found this sentence is because the documentation for the "httr" R package linked to it https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/httr/vignettes/secrets.html

oh wow yeah, I can see how that would be incredibly confusing. Well for the record, OAuth secrets are absolutely supposed to be secret, and we have different solutions for deployments that can't keep secrets.

Controversial opinion: recurring payment are an anti-pattern.

If a product/service does not have enough value to justify a quick "one click" checkout on a monthly basis, then anything recurring is rent seeking.

I know of at least one other person who shares this opinion :-)

Having one of those moments where I feel like I need to tear up my entire office and living room and reorganize things and get rid of clutter, but that is not a project I should start at 5pm on a Sunday

Update: I spent an hour cleaning and organizing, and ended up with two bags to take to goodwill. Not bad.

@aaronpk makes sense. I’ve got a larger residence, and I wanted in-wall switches so my wife & kids could keep using their muscle memory, which left us with zwave and weird stuff like Leviton as the options.

I'm glad that's working! I'm also testing this stuff out so that when I end up in a bigger place I know what to get, and I definitely want every light switch to be connected to the system!

@aaronpk gotcha! In my case I’ve been impressed with the performance of the ZWave devices but you’ve definitely tried more things than I have!

I'm also hesitant to go all z-wave because the devices tend to be a lot more expensive! If any of my other stuff starts failing in weird ways I'll give it a shot tho, maybe the cost is actually worth something.

@aaronpk does your Z-Wave software allow you to reorganize the network? I found that to be essential to fixing some connectivity issues I had. I’m using the Razberry / ZWay software. Post organization the mesh-ness was much more reliable for me.

There's a "heal network" button or something, but tbh I don't have enough z-wave devices to try it. Also my apartment is like 600 sq ft so pretty much everything is in direct line of sight to the receiver 😂

Looking for a simple hub for my new home office. I want USB-C to my computer and then 4x USB-C and USB-A ports on the hub. Nothing else (HDMI, Ethernet, microSD, etc.). I can’t find anything!

I've looked for that kind of thing too! I think USB-C is still too new and nobody is making hubs that provide additional USB-C outputs!
