Recently, I spoke at a local meetup about my experience breaking into tech and things I did, that people can do too. The fact that I said contributing to OSS can be a great thing to do, I got flagged for breaking CoC because it was a "microagression." I am absolutely appalled.

This makes me very mad 😡 This has the markings of a professional troll trying to push you out. Don't let them stop you. 💛

Where "bookmarks" could be any typical IndieWeb content type.

Dark Patterns at Scale: Findings from a Crawl of 11K Shopping Websites

June 26th, 2019

1,841 instances of dark patterns on ecommerce sites, in the categories of sneaking, urgency, misdirection, social proof, scarcity, obstruction, and forced action. You can browse this overview, read the paper, or look at the raw data.

We conducted a large-scale study, analyzing ~53K product pages from ~11K shopping websites to characterize and quantify the prevalence of dark patterns.

This doesn't seem like a problem unique to the web. Plenty of these tricks are done at physical stores too!

Looks like @United have switched equipment on me. I’ve been bumped out of my nice bulkhead seat all the way to the back of the bus. I at least managed to rearrange things to get an aisle, they’d originally stuck me in a middle for my sins, but it’s going to be a long flight.

That happened to me last week on @IcelandAir 😔 Got stuck in the window seat for an 8hr flight when I had chosen an aisle.

TIP 4: Set aside some time every single day at the same time to answer email. During this time slot just plow through whatever email you have remaining even if it seems like a massive job.

every time I do that, I end up spending the entire day answering emails or dealing with whatever it was the emails said I had to do

man, microformats was such a bust. wasted a whole year adding made up tags to projects thinking it’d enable some future neuro-web to emerge.

I grew up cycling everywhere, and my observation is that America absolutely doesn’t understand bicycles even a little bit at all.

This is very true, and a bicycle is my primary mode of transport in Portland, which won most bike-friendly city in the US multiple years in a row.
