News Explorer has thoroughly convinced me that RSS reader sync can — maybe should — be done client-side using storage you're already paying for, but everybody's building clients for dedicated, costly RSS services.

    Aaron Parecki
This is exactly why we're taking the alternate approach with Microsub, where your subscriptions and storage are something you own, and clients are just thin interfaces on top.

@aaronpk Hey can we meet up at XOXO? I've been a fan of your work for awhile and your new Overland-iOS project is super interesting to me. My friend @bgreenlee and I are here, we've built a very simple passive tracker using same APIs: https://wanderin.gs/docs/
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah for sure! I'm around the airstream this afternoon until 4!

Someone at the booth I was working at over the weekend used that with her iPad, and it looked pretty handy. It was either that or let a thousand people access her email.
    Aaron Parecki
Right! I've been signing in to an alternate iCloud account on my shared devices so that people can't turn on iMessage and start getting my messages, but this is a lot better!

@JohnPhilpin @rnv @kitt The API still doesn't allow images in replies. It started as a technical limitation, but whenever I look to expand it, I wonder if we're better off with simple replies. Images can be fun, but too many memes can also sidetrack or clutter a conversation. I feel like postponing that feature is best. (I could be wrong.)

    Aaron Parecki
This is the kind of thing I'm glad you're willing to push back on instead of blindly copying Twitter

Is it stupid to want some sort of standard video protocol so they could all play together?
    Aaron Parecki
I mean we already have that for audio, so why not also video?

Can you imagine how ridiculous it would be if you could only call other people if they used the same cell carrier as you?

i'm sure someone's said it, but as much as i like the vibe and support the vision, the practical impact of a lot of indieweb tech is kinda scant - like there are no real microschema aggregators or anything
    Aaron Parecki
It's still early days for sure, but there are some fun things already:

@EddieHinkle honestly it’s so much easier to reply here than it is via my website. I wish that wasn’t the case, but I go with it because everything gets picked up on my site as a webmention anyway.

    Aaron Parecki
Even compared to Together? I don't visit micro.blog itself anymore cause I have my following feed and the discover timeline added to my reader and it's way easier having everything in one place!

Successfully finished the Loose Leaf Security two-factor authentication zine and got it off to the printers in time for XOXO!

If you see me or @geofft there, ask us for a copy! (It’s free.)

I’ve had this bike for about three years now, and it’s still serving me well. 🚲

Nice! That's about two years longer than I've had most of my bikes because they keep getting stolen!

@aaronpk did this come through as a reply? I’m still putting Indigenous through paces & it doesn’t seem to thread back to Twitter correctly
    Aaron Parecki
hmm nope looks like Twitter is missing the reply context. The version of this on your website looks good though!

What is your go to base muffin recipe? I have one from an old Cook’s Illustrated that uses yogurt I like, but looking to compare.

@aaronpk cool! How do I follow the toots one? There's no domain or link and @ShuttleBot didn't find anything

    Aaron Parecki
Oops, forgot to link! It's XOXO_toots@hugsandtoots.club but no web link for it.

@aaronpk yay!! (how does it know an AP user is an attendee?)

    Aaron Parecki
There's a google sheet linked from the Slack, so I just followed everyone on it from the bot! It will also reject any follow requests from people it doesn't already follow.

Ah man. Had a big fuck-up with our iOS app overnight and had to pull it from the store and expedite an update. I really don't want to have to explain what happened, but what you're most scared of telling users is probably what they most deserve to hear, right...?

    Aaron Parecki
Definitely a good idea to be transparent. People will understand.

This must be related to the problem I just had which is the app asked me to log in and then gets stuck in a login loop.

If there is some security issue, I definitely want to know so that I can decide what action if any I need to take based on what information may be exposed.

I have Paprika, and I like the meal planner interface, I’ve just not collected enough recipes or written mine down for it to be useful. So maybe I just need to collect recipes and start editing for my own style and taste.

    Aaron Parecki
Yeah, it definitely takes a while for that to be useful. The interface is very good at adding recipes from websites though so it's not too bad to populate it!
