@aaronpk Sorry, I was euphemistically referring to Squarespace, because they advertise on every podcast, and I was ashamed to name them. I have gone the "let me pay you to take care of this for me" route.

    Aaron Parecki
That is to say, being indie just means being in control, and not being tied to a specific service. It's totally not about hosting everything in a server in your house or anything!

Doesn't matter where you host your website as long as you have your own domain name! I didn't even realize your website was hosted there! And if you want, you can change where it's hosted and I wouldn't have to do anything different to access it.

@aaronpk Yeah, I love what you're building there. My main problem with fully participating in the indie world is that my website is incredibly not-indie. I have given myself over to a certain prolific podcast advertiser for that. It's hard to resist.

    Aaron Parecki
wait what does podcast advertising have to do with your website not being indie? I see you have your own domain name, and one for your podcast! That's how it starts!

@aaronpk Well most of the plug-and-play ones in the App Store don't; they build compatibility with whatever hip new web service has come out recently, and if it has special features, they add settings. I'm pretty into the idea of a local client that can sync its entire state.

    Aaron Parecki
That's actually how I read and reply to things in micro.blog now. I wrote more about it here, and there's another article about it coming out tomorrow! https://aaronparecki.com/2018/03/12/17/building-an-indieweb-reader

We've gotta get more apps on board with Microsub! It's like an RSS reader syncing service except you own the service, and you can also reply to things directly from it!

Transcribing the Micro Monday Microcast is very eye-opening. I recommend doing the free trial at Trint and processing one of your recordings to really learn the verbal tics you have! 🤐

    Aaron Parecki
oh gosh I could never do that. That's why I edit mine so heavily before I publish! I edit out partial words and gaps of silence and other stuff I can't stand. That's also why I can only manage to publish 3-4 minutes at a time!

@colinwalker Yeah, that would do it.

    Aaron Parecki
This is exactly why I'm bullish on the idea of separating the subscriptions and feed parsing from the interface that you use to browse them! Every RSS reader shouldn't have to also build their own syncing backend!

Hi, Aaron! I tried it and I'm getting this response on the site now: "Your account is currently being checked every 24 hours. Your account was last checked 6 days ago and will be checked again in just now."

    Aaron Parecki
That's good! It was probably confused because of the Instagram failures. You should hopefully see some photos appear soon!

This should be fixed now! Instagram made another round of "API" changes so I had to compensate! Please try it again!

I can’t make it to the Micro.blog Homebrew Meetup or to @monteiro’s talk tonight. I’m having a bout with hay fever that I hoped would settle down. Instead, my neighbor just started mowing the lawn. 🤧 💊💊

    Oh no! Feel better!

Today’s lesson brought to you by echo '<pre>' . print_r($commits_response['0'], true) . '</pre>'; never once thought to wrap the output in pre tags before seeing it today.

    Aaron Parecki

I usually drop a little function into my projects function pa($a) { echo '<pre>'.print_r($a,true).'</pre>'; } for exactly that purpose. Then you can use pa() in place of print_r().

@simonmumbles I didn't ask. I view the audio snippets like a block quote. For me to be comfortable with it the length should feel equivalent to quoting 2-3 sentences out of a blog post.

    Aaron Parecki
That's a good rule of thumb. And the quoted audio should not end up being a "substantial" part of your work. As long as you have enough of your own original content in there, seems fair to be able to quote short snippets from others.

@manton If I remember my journalism classes correctly (15 years ago), you can use up to 60 seconds as Fair Use.

    Aaron Parecki
There's no hard and fast rule for what counts as "fair use". For example, if you were to use 60 seconds of a 120-second long work, that would likely not count as fair use because it would be reproducing a significant portion of the work.

@vishae I think there are problems right now with OwnYourGram and Instagram. My verification has stopped working in the last couple of days too. Perhaps @aaronpk could help.

    Aaron Parecki
It looks like Instagram changed something again so I'm going to have to track it down and fix OwnYourGram again.

I found that I have so many channels in my IndieReader that it was starting to create stress when I opened it. So I’m testing out viewing only channels with new content. Eventually this will be a filter setting you can quickly switch back and forth between

    Aaron Parecki
Nice! Yeah I'm having that problem too. One thing I like about glowing-bear.org is it has an option to only show IRC channels with new content, and there's a "search" box at the top of the list so you can quickly access your other channels. I think I've been holding off on doing something like this in Monocle until I can recreate that UI.
