The notion that every street in a city grid must be open to cars is just absurd to me. Its such an extreme position to take that no less than 100% of roads be allowed for cars. What we really need are pedestrian only corridors where one can travel on foot and not be constantly dodging traffic. Theme parks manage this and their entire business is to extract revenue from a captured audience. If it was bad for business we wouldn’t have spaces predicated on this model. #Urbanism

Elon Musk has been directing subordinates to comb through Twitter's Slack and make lists of people making fun of him or his plans for firing. They've also been monitoring employee's tweets. Latest w/ @kateconger and @MikeIsaac)

Another question regarding the Fediverse: "Would politicians, press, higher learning, celebrities actually ever be bothered to self-host an instance and pay someone to maintain it?"

    Again, Automattic answers that question.

What do all those institutions use for their websites? Self-hosted WordPress sites.

Who runs it? Someone they pay.

Self-hosting and maintenance can not only be normalized -- people would probably be happy to do it.

Automattic is one of the most important companies on the Internet.

They make Tumblr, WooCommerce, Akismet, LongReads, WordPress—among others.

WordPress alone powers ~44% of the world's websites.

More interesting: despite being such a large, dominant company, few people hate Automattic.

    Why is this? 🧵

So just to recap, new boss fired most of my coworkers, drove away most advertisers, keeps changing his mind about “free speech” and “verification”, is publicly denigrating my current and ex coworkers, and now won’t let anyone make any changes to the code. Things are going great!

If you’re interested in the lunacy at Twitter, then @platformer is the only place to go. Today’s newsletter documents how Musk ignores his own staff, shaming and firing them in public, has frozen all deployment and how advertisers won’t reengage until he reverses his changes.

It was a useful way to provide visibility via attribution for third party clients, like Tweetie (which was acquired and became the Twitter iOS app) or Tweetdeck (RIP).

It was also a useful status indicator (e.g. whether the tweet was sent via desktop or mobile).

Just a reminder that "self-hosted" doesn't *necessarily* have to mean literally hosting on a computer in your house. It just means you're in control over it.

People sometimes describe startups as rocket ships and it's a great metaphor. They set fire to tons of fuel, big chunks of the structure that did most of the early work are discarded into the ocean, and only a handful of people right at the top make it to space.
