If you ever find I boost your toot then immediately unboost it, it's because Mastodon refreshed the stream just as I was trying to open up a CW. 🤦♂️
God I hate the dynamic web. It's like opening up your refrigerator, reaching in to grab a bottle of orange juice, then just as your hand is about to grab it the bottle disappears and you smash your hand into half a dozen eggs instead.
I think the idea that a new Mastodon user is supposed to pick an instance based on affinity/interest is the number one thing that prevents people from joining. I think there needs to be a retooling of the messaging to make it about trust.
People don't join email services because of affinity. They do because they trust. They trust Google will be around for a long time. Or that hushmail won't sell their data. Or that Hotmail is easy to use. Etc etc.
So in the bot cull discourse on birdsite right now @darius mentioned making your social network support rss feeds and like.. if I could follow rss feeds on Mastodon the same way I follow individual users that would be pretty huge for me. Or like have a separate column that just displays rss updates.
I’ve been really enjoying the focus on personal websites that Vi Hart and M Eifler aka blinkpopshift have been putting into their recent Patrons-only VIM LIVE streams.
In addition to some great discussion about subscribing to RSS feeds of personal sites, I have really enjoyed the homework-slash-games like “post something on your website” and “collect what you might have tweeted into a blog”.
I think there’s a lot that the IndieWeb can learn from discussions like these as folks from different backgrounds are (re-)discovering what the web can be.
You can find previous and future VIM LIVE streams by supporting blinkpopshift or Vi Hart on Patreon.
