    This is great, thank you for writing it. I'm 100% with you. I love that you started with the indieweb value that it'snot about the tools. The evergreen debate there used to be self hosting; maybe now AI coding is another one. Who knows. Anyway, well written, appreciate the nuance, go forth and Claude Code.

    @bbbhltz i know @brennan runs an instance of the Ruby version (from pre-rewrite), you might use that instead? https://webmention.folk.zone

    Aaron Parecki
    If you're going to run the Ruby version in production, you'll really want to do some maintenance on it because I can't guarantee it's safe to run in that state!

    Thank you! Absolutely no pressure on a further reply. I know this stuff is complicated and everyone is just trying to do their best.

    > So if you don't like that I used #Claude to help build the replacement, that's fine! You can treat it as though I shut down the service and go find an alternative, because that is what would have happened anyway.

    Well poop. I guess I won't be using #webmentions until I find a solution

    No hard feelings! You can download a complete export of your data from webmention.io thanks to the new export feature Claude built! https://github.com/aaronpk/webmention.io/issues/109

    @brennan Oof.

    As for what we can do: I think some of us should self-host the services we care about. And some of us should write their own implementations. That's what standards are for. Having the first implementation be the only implementation that's used widely is a problem.

    Aaron Parecki
    Exactly! If this is what it takes to get people to build more alternatives to the services I run, I'll consider that a success!

Hi, I'm Aaron Parecki, Sr Director of Identity Standards at Okta, and co-founder of IndieWebCamp. I maintain oauth.net, write and consult about OAuth, and participate in the OAuth Working Group at the IETF. I also help people learn about video production and livestreaming. (detailed bio)

I've been tracking my location since 2008 and I wrote 100 songs in 100 days. I've spoken at conferences around the world about owning your data, OAuth, quantified self, and explained why R is a vowel. Read more.
