February 11, 2022 will stand out in the record books for the number of high temperature records set in western Oregon and Washington. In Portland, this is the warmest it's ever been this early in the year. #kgwweather

@aaronpk didn’t work for me, none of my stats came across.

If you go clear your localstorage on nytimes then you can use this tool I just made to recreate it!

@manton Josh Wardle mentioned this, and other under-the-hood stuff that I found interesting, on the Syntax podcast this week. (Domain transfer stuff in particular, sounded tricky.)

    Aaron Parecki
oh nice, i'll have to give that a listen!

say... that gives me an idea...

(Warning: don't click this if you haven't already migrated your actual wordle stats)

Open this link and then look at your wordle stats page πŸ“ˆ

Alright now you can make up your own wordle stats for the nytimes version! Fill out the numbers with whatever you want, then click the link it generates!

(If you want to overwrite your current nytimes stats you'll need to delete your localstorage first)

Also, if you try to force the transfer to repeat, by navigating again to the old URL, it will still not transfer data, and wipe your new stats in the process. They don’t seem to have put much thoughts on edge cases πŸ˜›
    Aaron Parecki
That's weird, that's not what happens for me, if the nytimes version has any of its own stats it doesn't overwrite it from the redirect.

@aaronpk That's cool. I play Wordle on both my phone and laptop, so already my saved data was fragmented and didn't sync up, but nice that NYT thought of this and kept it simple.

    Aaron Parecki
With a bit of URL trickery you could combine your stats now thanks to the migration tool! Just make a link that looks like the real one and nytimes will happily use it!

Pretty neat trick Wordle used to migrate everyone's saved game state:

The main Wordle site was replaced with a bit of JS that grabs the game data from LocalStorage and puts it in the query string when redirecting to nytimes.

Also notable: that code is vanilla JS, no libraries!

Makes sense. I bet for most folks the question isn't "is the point and shoot good" but "is it good enough to carry another piece of gear."

Turns out us photo/video nerds are apparently used to carrying a lot of gear. LOL.
    Aaron Parecki
Yeah for sure, and frankly I take far more photos with my iPhone because it's always just right there. But if I'm putting any thought into it I will always take a real camera instead.

I still primarily use the one I have in a tab. The one I added to the home screen was done when I was testing it to see if it was a PWA.

I know that when I eventually get redirected to the NYT site that I will look my streak data so I may switch to the home screen then.
    Aaron Parecki
They migrate your saved game state on the redirect! See my last tweet!
