In the case at hand, the echo cancellation is too slow, as the CPU is overloaded.

Frankly I'm amazed that level of aggressive echo cancellation works at all!

Feature request for all video conferencing apps: add an "echo test" button so people can test whether they're about to cause a massive echo when joining a call.

You're describing a possible UA behavior, not the proposed standard.

Have you read the explainer? Given who proposed it and their description of how they plan to use it this seems like a fair statement.

Is it WhatsApp or is it iOS that kills video calls once you background the app? I’ve been having a lot of sporadically dropped calls with WhatsApp solely with iOS users (and degraded video quality).

Probly whatsapp not using iOS APIs properly. I can have Zoom calls in the background for a long time
