It's absolutely wild to me that companies will mail me a postcard a few weeks after an Amazon purchase and offer a $150 gift card to leave a review! Is that really profitable? Are they actually going to make back $150 because of my one review?

@aaronpk Makes me wonder "how much" they know about people. Does everybody get the same offer? Or does it get offered by the CRM system that has correlated multiple purchased data sets that rank customers based on "influence", or better yet "reputation". Now THAT is in accounting terms, "good will". Which I'm guessing is worth more than the $150 that might appear on a profit/loss statement.

Ah, the illegal fake review scheme that can cause them to lose their store. It would be a shame if they got reported...

@aaronpk And how many reviewers will have a back bone to write that the product is a piece of crap?

@aaronpk It sounds like a lot to “pay” (it doesn’t cost them $150) for a review, but the ROI depends on the price of the item being sold. Good reviews are a necessity for a successful listing on Amazon and they will affect sales performance for years. However, the technique is risky for them because it violates Amazon’s ToS and could cause them to lose the ability to sell on that platform.

It's a bribe, to influence the ratings, once the product has sufficient good ratings the price point of product is raised and this other customers pay the price. Ratings are fast becoming useless like imdb.

Someone sent me a photo of a postcard they received after buying a mic. They were saying "if you give us a 5-star review, you can have a free mic, or you can get $25 back" or something like that.

Odd that it's that much. @podcastage had a company offering him a free cheap microphone or something in exchange for a 5 star review. I don't remember the details but I'm sure he'll fill you in

@aaronpk I am a proud owner of a beach tent which was sent to us unsolicited and unannounced in order to get a good review I believe.
