    Hello internet friends!

What is the best way to share a set of photos with a select few people, while being able to add more photos over an extended period of time? Must not rely on creating an account like on iCloud.

I have my own thoughts but I am interested in other ideas!

@aaronpk gallery.flak.is is Lychee. It's not very good, but it's good enough for precisely the above reason (sharing).

It does geo and search and albums so it's good enough for me.

I also have a smol service set up that feeds it my Syncthing incoming synced images which get imported automatically, that makes it a reasonably "close enough" Google Photos replacement :3

I decided to try out NextCloud for this, it mostly works, but has some weird things:

      • The new dashboard view is completely useless for this use case
      • It's weird that I'm giving people an entire toolset just to be able to look at photos

@aaronpk #Nextcloud's new photo app is nice (the one in Nextcloud Hub 3). It is self hosted, but there's many places that will host Nextcloud for you, often for free with a limited space.

@aaronpk by the way. I think on iCloud, via Files. If one person starts the collection, others can add into the public folder. No signup required.

@aaronpk We Transfer ? Never used it. But I do believe other people with massive photo collections use it.

Burn CD's and send them via the USPS. Keep the USPS solvent.

Right now I am using PhotoPrism which is pretty similiar to google photos. However you can only create links to share albums. I have also tried Piwigo which supports multiple users but somehow I struggled with synchronizing photos from my phone.

+1 here. I used it for my mother’s memorial. People can upload and contribute, and everyone can both browse and download the originals. Could be slicker but was the best I could find for this purpose.

It’s not great but iCloud shared albums have a website option that does not require the recipient to have an account. Handy if you already rely on it.

Basic Auth is super easy but you can use OIDC or OAuth via just about any IDP and limit access to certain domains or specific emails Happy to help if you want a hand :)

@aaronpk I mean.. Nextcloud can be a pain and is kinda basic -- even with the Photos plugin. But the thing is.. Either you have an installation already or you can set one up for little money in a few minutes.

@aaronpk If you do not want to create an account it means they are shared publicly, or you can password protect them. But if you want to add more to the mix, then this idea sounds like a nightmare for any server admin. Imagine bots adding lots of messedup photos to your server, constantly.

Thus you either need a file sharing without account solution, like send.trom.tf/ - you add the photos/files, you put a password if you want, you share. Or by far the best is Nextcloud. files.trom.tf/ - create a quick account and add your photos, then add more, then share as you wish.

@aaronpk https://piwigo.org/ which you can host yourself or use their hosted version which you pay for. It also has mobile apps if you need them.

We use it with extended family. You know, the grandparents who don't live on Facebook, it gets the job done. Better than Dropbox or such.

It's interesting to think about the threat model difference between someone accidentally sharing the link vs someone sharing their account info to leak the data

Honestly, probably a private group message on your app of choice. iCloud can share no-account-required photo sets via iCloud link, but you can’t add to the link over time and would have to reshare. Otherwise you could go old-school and self-host a photo page behind a password.

That's interesting, it looks like basically a private Instagram account that you can share with specific people. Promising.

To be clear, open source is nice but not a requirement. However I don't want to require that someone who has no current affiliation with a big name like Apple/Google/Amazon have to create an account on that service.
