Tbf my takeaway wasn't that they invented it, only that they whipped up something blockchain-y for marketing artistic items during a hackathon a few years ago and NFTs are still basically it

Normally I'd be inclined to agree with you, but his tweet is pretty clear:

"When we created the first NFTs back in 2014..."

true dat. I trace "firsts" a lot, but execution >> ideas.

Yeah one of my takeaways in having written about this is a lot of folks put a lot more weight on “invention” or “first” than I do. Everything is always the result of communities collaborating over time, not some lone creation myth. Appreciate the dialogue about all of it.

fair enough :-) I mean, you did in fact do the thing, and colored coins didn't really go anywhere (though the idea later became Mastercoin aka Omni Layer, the ERC20-like idea for Bitcoin that Tether initially ran on)

You can feel free to read it as “when we created one early implementation of an idea lots of folks were thinking about, which had many antecedents and subsequent innovations”. It’s just a tweet, I didn’t think about it that much.

Fair. As I said that was my takeaway from the article where there's no mention of "novelty". I agree that the tweet isn't consistent with that reading, but it might just be a thoughtless typing moment
