“I don’t like the color of that wall in my house”

“Thanks for the feedback! We’ll consider repainting everyone’s walls if enough house owners agree with you!”

The lack of agency we have over our software would seem absurd in other contexts.

There's a saying that writing software is more like tending a garden than constructing a building -- things constantly change.

But the more I learn about how buildings evolve, I think this process is actually a perfect analogy for designing software!

Every time I get on a video call and people see my video looks great, the first thing I get asked is which camera I’m using, but the camera is the least important in the whole setup. Lights are the main thing, angle, lens and how far my background is contribute a lot to the look.

Need to patch Lighthouse to not have expiring tokens when attempting to send out Webmentions. I’m using JWTs (only because this inbuilt system is using that by default) and it’s a bit annoying to have this huge token string. Might consider implementing a simpler token that keeps data on the server so the client knows less

    Aaron Parecki
JWTs leaking info to clients is underrated

One key skill to develop in the Zoom era: performing grimaces and skeptical expressions intense enough to steer the conversation without having to say anything 😛😖😬😮🤔

Use the device flow for this, right @aaronpk?
    Aaron Parecki
Device flow is a good option for this. But the regular auth code flow and either automatically launching or just showing the URL to click on works too. Downside of that is the CLI app needs to spin up a web server to catch the callback. Device flow doesn't have that requirement

When will standards folks realize that "spec" is short for "specification" and not "speculation"?

Upload is a comedy but it’s like a legit passive critique of tech eating up everything and finding a way to charge for anything. Those without funds are forced to live at 10 minutes on the hour and you can’t even get clothes in some cases.

getting a laser printer was 100% worth the up-front cost. you know how much ink i've had to buy in the last year and a half? none ink
    Aaron Parecki
Right? They're not even that expensive anymore either! I've been carrying around mine for like 6 years now. I think I've bought one replacement toner.

When Yahoo bought Flickr and delicious, was that anti-competitive, or does it only count if it works?

One day last week I saw the UPS truck drive by my house AND IT DID NOT STOP.

I bet the driver thought something must be wrong, too.

@aaronpk Building out my studio (thanks for all your info!).

If you bought a new camera today for streaming/video with $1k budget (body only is fine for dslr), what would you get?
    Aaron Parecki
The Lumix G7 is probably the best bet. $500 including a kit lens. https://geni.us/sJFt Then upgrade the lens to the Lumix 15mm or 12-35mm for better depth of field. Also get the usb battery for continuous power.
