The number of virtual happy hours and social events at work I've been invited to has skyrocketed. I've been self-employed or work-from-home for the vast majority of my career. Is this how much work-social time is normal *at* the office that people are now lacking?

Somewhere between “yes” and “people are overcompensating.” If you count, “anyone want to walk over to that taco stand for lunch today” then there’s a lot of social interactions.

@aaronpk it can also be due to sudden unplanned shift to remote work. So such socialising is needed compared to regular remote work

When I started working in a local office for the first time in a couple decades a few years back, I was surprised how often there were organized social activities. This is now spilling over into my comfy remote-worker space and I'm not sure how I feel about it. :-)

It really depends on the job. And how many extroverts there are.
