I want the iPad Pro to replace a computer so bad, but I just signed a PDF in Gmail, Gmail needed to save the file to Files, but can’t attach files *from* Files, so I had to download Google Drive and export the file from Files to Google Drive so Gmail can find it. 🤦‍♂️

Yeah it turns out it was a new feature they were rolling out slowly and it wasn't available to me yet.

Figures. I still don’t have it. Also still don’t have dark mode in gmail. Their “staggered rollout” sucks. How long has dark mode been a thing?!

That literally just happened to me too! I thought my apps were set to auto update. Went into the App Store and searched gmail, no update found, waited a few seconds and was able to download the update.

Oh snap! Downloading now. Annoyingly iOS shows (and still does) no updates needed for any app but as soon as I looked up Gmail, it needed and update. Hmmm

I think the Engadget article solves the mystery, though; google is doing a staggered rollout of the feature, so some people have it and others don’t.

My phone does, but it’s not reflected in gmail (again, see screenshot). it looks like it was included in a recent gmail update engadget.com/2020-02-14-gma…

I hear you; that was clear to me. It works for me, both on iPhone and iPad from the native gmail app — see my screenshot twitter.com/dreeves/status…

I think the problem David is that he wants to attach from iOS Files, not google drive. AFAIK you can’t access iOS Files from Gmail app.

I worry a lot that my intense comfort level with “normal computers” will become a crutch as I get older and prevent me from fully embracing the new paradigm. But also I have to get work done…

@aaronpk It always seems like Google’s products are the ones who don’t want to play nice with iOS/iPasOS. I don’t get it since this is coming from some of the best engineers out there, unless this is a philosophical decision.

iOS needs to fix two problems with files: 1. A better files app (easy) 2. Get all apps to support saving to/opening from it (very hard) It's no good having a better files app if Instagram doesn't expose it

True, definitely some blame to share from each. iPadOS has improved quite a bit but attachment upload workflows could be better.

I get that, I just wish “Files” wasn’t an app, I wish you could move files around like most desktop operating systems allow.

This is what I see. Also the amount of time it took to pixelate this screenshot was obscene, it would have taken a few seconds on a computer. I had to download a dedicated app for this, even Photoshop and Lightroom on iOS don’t have this filter.

The irony is I actually vastly prefer editing photos in Lightroom on the iPad compared to a computer now.

Totally agree about the iPad in general, but I’m pretty sure that specific case is handled in the gmail app - tap the paperclip, then the folder icon under attachments

It’s a shame the Google apps on iOS generally suck. As a Gmail / iPad user, I use Gmail for simple reading / replying to messages, but often hop over to Apple Mail (connected to my Gmail account) anytime I need to interact with the system in any way.

and after all that, Gmail sent a Google Drive link in the email instead of actually attaching the file. Thanks.
